Bob Fertik is co-founder of democrats.com and of afterdowningstreet.org. Bob was on the historic panel moderated by Mike Malloy at Sacramento’s Crest Theater on April 29th.
He writes about the “enthusiasm--even joy-- of the audience.” “That joy was mixed with sadness.” He made the striking analogy of the current state of this nation to Flight 93.
And as much energy, joy, momentum and historic power is generated by the event, I am here to tell you that when the first roaring, unanimous standing cheer for the Impeachment of George Bush and Dick Cheney came that evening-- I stayed seated. I had jumped up in the ovation for Mike Malloy when he entered, I was in support of those standing this time, but I sat and hung my head...
With my heart breaking and tears in my eyes for what our country has come to.

Sacramento Impeachment Forum is a Huge Success
<snip>
From the outset, I was stunned by the enthusiasm - even joy - of the audience. We know from the polls that 100-150 million Americans think Bush should be impeached. But because the Corporate Media is controlled by the White House, Americans are never allowed to see, hear, and feel that support. So we share our feelings with our politically sympathetic friends, but otherwise feel completely isolated from the masses of Americans who share our feelings. By filling the Crest Theater with impeachment supporters, Joye Swan and the Progressive Caucus unleashed those feelings and created a hall filled with joy.
That joy was mixed with sadness, as Iraq veteran Tim Goodrich described the devastation caused by the Iraq War. But that sadness fueled the anger that convinced the participants that impeachment was not just necessary and right, but also urgent.
To underscore the urgency, I drew an analogy from Flight 93. While there is a big debate in the media whether it's too soon to revisit Flight 93, I argued that it is 3 years too late - because America itself has been hijacked by extremist ideologues, and all of us are unwilling passengers on a suicide mission in the Middle East. Like the passengers of Flight 93, we must stop the hijackers by storming the cockpit and retaking control of our nation. Friends say the analogy struck a deep chord.
Of course we talked about all of the grounds for impeachment. At this point, no one can offer a credible defense for any of Bush's crimes. The only area of doubt is whether Bush was personally involved in the decisions to commit these crimes, and that doubt was laid to rest recently when Bush declared, "I'm the Decider."
So the next question is why Congressional Democrats have refused to introduce Articles of Impeachment. Luckily Rep. Maxine Waters was on the panel, and she described discussions we had earlier this year, which led her to propose impeaching Cheney first. That discussion was sidetracked when Sen. Russ Feingold introduced his Censure Resolution, but the refusal of most Senate Democrats to back Feingold appears to have convinced Waters to move ahead with her idea. And of course we will support Waters 1000% if she does.
But the Forum made it clear that activists do not have to wait for Congress to get the impeachment process going.

From the AAR blog of Mike Malloy on May 2, 2006
"And while this eruption of blood and gore and death and destruction and fraud and horror upon horror continues, day after day, week after week, endlessly, George W. Bush plans yet another attack on yet another country. This is madness and it is intolerable in a society that still claims to be a democracy, a Republic, a nation of laws. In reaction to the Bush Crime Family’s open and – to this point – unchallenged criminality, there is rising within the States a powerful movement that is declaring George W. Bush the criminal that he is and is organizing his removal from office."
Mike says "Legally and Peacefully." Bob says it's time to "DEBUSHIFY AMERICA." :thumbsup:
