GOP Scandal: Barbour Had Controlling Interest in Phone Jamming Firm

By Paul Kiel - May 3, 2006, 10:55 AM
Last Friday, the AP reported that GOP big-wig Haley Barbour was one of the investors in GOP Marketplace, the consulting firm central to the New Hampshire phone jamming.

But a closer read of the company's founding documents show a much deeper connection than Barbour admitted to the AP. He had direct control over the company's management.

8. I didn't get that impression,
these types of business arrangements are pretty common. I spent 10 years in commercial mortgages and saw this alot. It seemed to me that Barbour's group HELM was the money backer and that Raymounds group was the organizational backer. The article said that it was someone other than Barbour at HELM who was the "manager" for their group. I'd be more interested in the Partnership Agreement for HELM than I would be of the Partnership Agreement for GOP Marketers to see just who made the decisions in this deal.

9. Who did make the decisions?
I sure don't know, but wouldn't it be a useful exercise to investigate this, get a few people under oath, gather some evidence and testimony, and sort out the guilty from the innocent? I'd sure like to hear what Mr. Barbour has to say for himself. Under oath. That is, if he's not afraid of being struck by lightning should he touch a Bible.

10. I agree.
I'm definately not saying that this shouldn't be explored. I just wanted to make the point that this wasn't (at least from what I've read so far) that unusual of a business deal in and of itself. The trial will ultimately find out if this partnership was formed legally for an illegal purpose. That being the case, if that is true, then we definately have Barbour sitting squarely in the thick of things.
