Last nites Daily Show question
Jon showed marching Iraqi soldiers, then showed them pulling off their uniforms and quitting??
What was that all about?
did I get it right, that the soldiers quit when they were told they would be going to Shite areas to police?
That seems to be a big snafu on bushco's part if you ask me... if this is true.

6. was a post about that here yesterday or day before.
some in Iraqi army were promised they wouldn't be hauled off to other locations but remain in their areas. Brass had orders for them to go elsewhere, they quit.

can't find the thread and apologises if I misunderstood, but believe this is the gist of it.

11. Because that's just "negative" ya see!
Far better to show people repairing a school that will be used at night as a base for the insurgency, or running electricity to an area that will be blown to shit a week later!!

For those Iraqi soldiers, freedom isn't on the march (and they couldn't march for shit, frankly), freedom is taking off your uniform, stomping on it, and going home!

3. Yes, they were Sunni troops

...who had been told when they enlisted that they would be guarding their own neighborhoods. Then when they were told they would be patroling Shiite areas instead, most of them resigned on the spot. Jon Stewart said that US troops watching the spectacle remarked, "You can do that?"

Yes, it's true. They mentioned it on the corporate news before the Daily Show, but I don't think they had the video (which was far better than just a description of it).

He's ruining our military and our economy and he and his 32% don't give a shit.

5. I think it was an all Sunni group of soldiers
and they were being stationed in a Shiite area as you said so they took their uniforms off to quit! I couldn't figure out for sure if it was true either, but I think it may have been.

7. It would seem recruiters lied to them - haven't we heard that before?

HABBANIYA, Iraq (Reuters) - Newly graduated Iraqi soldiers protested after a passing out parade on Sunday saying they were promised they would serve only in their hometowns.

The troops were among 1,000 graduates, mostly from the Sunni Arab minority, at the Habbaniya base near Falluja west of Baghdad.

The protesters told reporters they were unhappy about their first assignments after being promised they would serve only in their hometowns.

Some took off their shirts and threw them down in anger. Others yelled at their officers and threatened to quit. One officer yelled back, telling them to leave, witnesses said.

8. Something like that ...
I cannot find the link to the story, but when they finished training, they were told they would be assigned to areas away from their families. That's when the protests started.

9. They were told that they would be assigned to their region
then, when given their orders were assigned to other areas. They felt bamboozled.

Go to Riverbend's blog... http://riverbendblog.blogspot.com/

"As for news of the new Iraqi army, it isn’t going as smoothly as Bush and his crew portray. Today we watched footage of Iraqi soldiers in Anbar graduating. The whole ceremony was quite ordinary up until nearly the end- their commander announced they would be deployed to various areas and suddenly it was chaos. The soldiers began stripping their fatigues and throwing them around, verbally attacking their seniors and yelling and shoving. They were promised, when they signed up for the army in their areas, that they would be deployed inside of their own areas- which does make sense. There is news that they are currently on strike- refusing to be deployed outside of their own provinces.

One can’t help but wonder if the ‘area’ they were supposed to be deployed to was the north of Iraq? Especially with Iranian troops on the border… Talbani announced a few days ago that the protection of Kurdistan was the responsibility of Iraq and I completely agree for a change- because Kurdistan IS a part of Iraq. Before he made this statement, it was always understood that only the Peshmerga would protect Kurdistan- apparently, against Iran, they aren’t nearly enough."
