What is really going on here is an old trick of the warmongers. Which is that you equate hurtful statements of your enemy with an actual military threat, and make a weak and vulnerable enemy look like a strong, menacing foe. Then no one can complain when you pounce on the enemy and reduce his country to flames and rubble.

It is obvious that powerful political forces in Washington are fishing for a pretext to launch a war on Iran, and that they are just delighted to have Ahmadinejad as cartoon villain and pretext. But they had a moderate, reforming president in Mohammad Khatami for 8 years, and just blew off all his overtures to the West. Iranians organized big candle-light vigils for America after September 11, in sympathy!

One, two, three, four! We don't want your stinking war!

We are not going to see any more US troops come home in body bags at Dover for the sake of some Cheney affiliate grabbing the petroleum in Iran's Ahvaz fields.



We are not going to let dozens of US corporations loot the American people and the Iranian people alike with no-bid "contracts", embezzlement, corruption, and graft.

We are not going to let you have a war against Iran.

1. I read Juan Cole everyday, but today's issue is a MUST READ!

Juan is kicking ass and taking names! I don't think I have ever seen him with his blood so up. He said that he was for non-violent protest, but that he wasn't a pacifist - well, his words today are damn sure fighting words! GO Juan!

I think Cole said what he had to say about this issue in an appropriate way considering the fact that Hitchens just 'attacked' Cole with the piece in Salon.com

1) It was pure speculation that Hitchens was in fact drinking at the time of the writing.
2) Juan Cole should be arguing on substance not character.

Now, I understand why Juan brought it up, but it doesn't make it any less unprofessional. Juan lost his cool, plain and simple. There was no need to stoop to "their" level.

is not speculation. Hitchens demonstrated his problem to Cole in person that night.

And, in which case, some of the information one needs to understand Hitchens is how he is being affected by his drinking.

16. Drunk or not it is irrelevant.

Hitchens function is as a journalist. If he were in a leadership position then character would be germaine. However, Hitchens is a man of words and as such only his words are relevant. Professor Cole does a fine job of disemboweling Hitchens words; but the ad hominem attack was irrelevant and served no purpose other than to lash out at Hitchens. I do not need to understand Hitchens psyche in order to understand the validity of his words. There is a word for judging what someone says based on anything other than what they have said and that word is prejudice. I would prefer not to prejudice myself against Hitchens words, regardless of how loathsome he may be in person.
