Media Matters: What would it take for CNN to cancel Glenn Beck's contract?

http://mediamatters.org/campaign/beck-cnn.htm

What would it take?

Glenn Beck, a Philadelphia-based radio host, was recently hired by CNN to host a show on CNN Headline News. Beck has a history of making outrageous and hateful statements. For example, he said that illegal immigrants are either "terrorists," outlaws, or people who "can't make a living in their own dirtbag country."

Despite this and other hateful statements, Beck will be hosting a show on CNN. This begs the question: What would he have to say for CNN to cancel his contract?

Some possibilities:

* Saying "Indians will have found something that can be more profitable than casinos, and that's abortion clinics. And then, look out, man -- exploiting everything illegal for profit." (Nope -- he said that on April 4, 2006.)

* Calling Cindy Sheehan "a pretty big prostitute" but later agreeing that "tragedy pimp" would be a more accurate term for Sheehan. (Nope -- he said that on January 10, 2006.)

* Saying that Jimmy Carter is a waste of skin. (Nope -- he said that on February 9, 2006.)

Glenn Beck, with his history of hateful and outrageous comments, shouldn't be on CNN.

I've written them 4X about the "waste of skin" Glenn Beck...
No replies - they just don't care that they're turning over their airwaves to a racist fuckwit. I'm done with CNN, right across the board.

4. It won't take long for several reasons:
1) He is not telegenic, he is actually pretty damn homely...pictures don't lie.

2) He is amazed at his own "Success", and will stick his head up his butt within a week with some incredibly stupid statement that will offend just about everybody.

3) He is remarkably obnoxious. He yells, throws tantrums, hangs up on callers, calling them "morons" because they don't agree with him.

4) History: Savage, Limbaugh, and other RW fanatics and essentially insane mouth-breathers have a horrid lifespan on anything but FOX. Inevitably, they cannot control themselves and people get very upset being told what to believe, and how to act in their individual, private lives.

They get hung by their own hubris, they cannot control themselves; they believe they are the "omnipotent being" that is here to enlighten the masses. They are always enabling on a base life level, but thoughts are as distant from them as the galaxies outside of our own Milky Way.

On the outside, I give him two weeks.

5. He definitely has "a face for radio"...
...and yeah, he'll push the wrong button and CNN will get the message. The question is "What made them think this was a good idea?" Free publicity, I guess, and the old axiom that "there's no such thing as 'bad' publicity."

6. I think they figure Beck has good radio ratings,,,but unlike TV
radio cannot really be "rated" in the same way. Today, cable, satellite and some other forms can be monitored, radio can't, it's just "out there".

Limbaugh has said for years his EIB network has "6 million listeners", yeah right....do they check cars out, or go to people's houses? It is all BS, and Beck's ratings in TV will be somewhere near bottom out...he is a slug, and not many people will care to hear his schtick.

8. I disagree.
Look at Nancy Grace. She's been around a lot longer than two weeks.

9. Nancy Grace has horrid ratings as well.....
she serves a little niche on CNN HLN at 8pm Eastern. Virtually no one tunes in to Grace. Her Court TV
screed is watched only by the incredibly faithful...(who really watches Court TV?).

There are two aspects of Grace that has appeal to the RW screechmonkies, she is telgenic,(she is not downright homely); and her personality is reptilian...both things that the RW thinks are necessary for success in TV.

Beck, on the other hand, is a complete jerk, nothing of substance, absolutely nothing there. He will go OTT in next to no time.

10. I bet he goes the way of Rush Limbaugh on "NFL Sunday Countdown."
Glenn Beck will stick his foot in his mouth in much the same way, & CNN will have no choice but to send him back to radio.
