I'm much more concerned about Alito granting more power to the
Executive Branch of Govt than anything else!!!!

Many on Du say overturning Roe is the most important issue, but I don't think so. Poloticians as well as judges know how much opposition there is in the general public against overturning Roe, and I really don't think it will happen. There would be an extreme revole if that happened! If the SCOTUS grants MORE power to the Executive Branch, EVERY American is in deep trouble! It will be done before most people even realize they should care!!!!

1. Yep - me too
As important as Roe is, I fear the executive branch takeover and unrestrained corporations even more. With Alito and Roberts this is what we get.

2. I agree. It is numero uno!
But it is educational to say the least, to watch this worm in action.

3. Me three
I got into this discussion with my husband last night that yes, abortion and women's rights are very important, but I see a larger issue of giving the exec. branch any more power. This would be very serious and the potential there is that then they can do whatever the hell they want with no checks and balances. I see it as winning the battle but losing the war, focusing primarily on abortion/choice rights and not exec powers.

4. "EVERY American is in deep trouble"...
What about when a democratic president is elected?

It goes both ways. If the repubs eliminate the filibuster and increase executive power just to milk the next three years they're in for a rude awakening in 2008...

Unless they also eliminate voting and that pesky "by the people, for the people" thing.

5. I agree...
If the Executive Branch gets the type of power that Alito is saying they should have, then all bets are off. Thom Hartmann said today that Bush sounds more and more like Stalin and I wholeheartedly agree.

Conservatives should be just as scared of this nutjob as we are...

6. I agree and there were 2 disturbing exchanges so far that I heard
One, yesterday, was with L Graham, in which he seemed to say that if someone was designated an "enemy combatant" a military court should deal with it, even if citizen (Padilla)-Alito was not strong in discussing this.

The second was an exchange with Feingold that, at least to me, sounded like Alito was saying that the SCOTUS would punt issues if it looked as if it should be worked out between 2 other branches. So, if Republicans stay in power, it's useless to say that Bush's overreaching should be "worked out" with congress.

This really has me worried! ShrubCo is trying the power grab, and it damn seems to be working! The ONLY thing the people have is the SCOTUS to reel them in!!!!!

8. I am a pretty open minded person
into two days of these convermation hearings I have heard enough. I believe in exsacaly that he will give more power to the Executive Branch.
We need to fillerbuster Alito. What bothers me that these judges are so out of touch with the average Joe.

9. Yup and I'm a HUGE supporter of choice
but when I see him .. I see all kinds of nasty implications of his becoming appointed. I see checks and balances, what little is left to them, go to shit.

I think he's more lethal the Roberts .. and the combo is a WMD to the Constitution and the American people

10. Abortion is a smokescreen
to cover for BushCo's corporatist agenda and presidential power grab. But us sheeple wouldn't understand that, so they play the abortion card. Just like in '04 they used the gay card.
