Irony Lives! Bush awarded doctor of laws degree!?!?!
Yep, you read it right. HONORARY DOCTOR OF LAWS DEGREE. It says so in the caption!

President Bush waves to the audience after being presented with an honorary doctor of laws degree from Oklahoma State University, following his delivery of the commencement at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla., Saturday, May 6, 2006. (AP Photo)

250 people protested the monkey at the graduation ceremonies.

After the speech, some graduates said they couldn't make out clearly what Bush said because of an echo in the audio system at Boone Pickens Stadium.

"I couldn't really hear it because the sound was so bad," said Michelle Ward, who earned a degree in biomedical sciences.

Graduates in the 2,700-member class assembled in Boone Pickens Stadium wore plastic slickers to keep their gowns dry from drizzle. Bush spoke from a covered platform to a crowd of about 20,000 people, many of whom wore orange raincoats made available to those in the stadium. Protesters staged a peaceful demonstration outside.
(glad to see it was wet and miserable)

About 250 protesters held signs and chanted anti-Bush slogans a block from the OSU stadium. One protester held a sign that read, "Worst President Ever."

"If he's coming to my town, I'm going to let him know he's not welcome here and that Oklahomans are not as bright as they think," said Laurie Keeley, 25, a protester from Tulsa.

I hope that Steven Colbert reads about his degree and does a bit on it. The man who has broken over 750 laws gets an honorary law degree, oh the irony of it all.

20. Which makes it all the more ridiculous that he gets this honor.
Does the university know about his "signing statements"?

5. Oklahoma is Bible belt and red. I was born there and
always thought it was 50 years behind the times. Nothing has changed IMHO. I still have relatives there who keep me up to date.

12. Things are changing ...

During the last poll of this sort of thing, Oklahoma is *not* among the few states that are still giving Shrub a positive approval rating.

And most likely, you'll see mAnn Coulter, Hannity, and other conservatives crowing about how Bush was the "best candidate" for this honor. Someone shoot me.

22. I respect the University of Chicago stance on honorary degrees...
Queen Elizabeth came to the U of C and the Chancellor was asked if she was going to be given a degree- the answer was "not unless she's met all the requirements".

24. To me, this makes sense.
* got his bachelors and MBA at Yale with a terrible gradepoint average, thus not truly earning the same sheepskin as his compatriots. He got it because of the Bush legacy and he showed up.

* applied to and was turned down from University of Texas Law School at Austin, thus frustrating his attempt to be an attorney (thus, the MBA as a contingency).

* got his doctor of law degree, albeit symbolically, yesterday at University of Oklahoma. He didn't have to apply, take and get LSAT score, get picked on by a myriad of law professors and ridiculed for not knowing a holding, take maddening exams after 6 semesters, and finally passing the bar.

He may not be able to become a lawyer with his honorary degree, but he still has the satisfaction of getting yet one more thing without the dedication that others have to devote to get the same thing. Once again.
