Went to see Al Gore at Vanderbilt tonight, |
|
speaking on global climate change. Whoever was the event planner for this way misunderestimated the number of people. We were the last people allowed in the door and there were hundreds in line behind me (couldn't even see the end of the line). After we got in there were no seats and hundreds of us crowded in standing behind the seats. They then announced that due to fire marshall rules everyone standing would have to leave the auditorium and stay in the lobby. A lot of people left then (including my child's biology teacher, who was giving extra credit to those who attended, but we were going anyway) but we stayed and listened to the speakers in the hall and could see in through the door.
Anyway, it was interesting. I was surprised to learn that the reason we don't sell cars in China was because we don't meet their emission standards.

I would love to see him run for the senate from TN. I think he'd make a great candidate for Frist's seat.
We don't meet China's emission standards ? Whoo-wee, we are in trouble.

9. He's already been there and done that |
|
I don't think he'd do it again.

2. Glad to hear there was a good turn out |
|
for President Gore! Sounds like an interesting lecture, too. I didn't know that about our emission standards, but it doesn't surprise me.

6. I work on campus, as does my wife, and we were there early |

Got a little wine, a little cheese, and seats! The most telling statistic in all of the horrifying data was that of all the scientific reports on the subject, NONE disputed the concept, whereas of all the news reports surveyed, over HALF said "maybe it's true, maybe it's not." That, to my mind is the heart of America's situation, and not just on the environment -- the press has, en masse, made the fatal mistake of confusing "balance" with "truth." They present one, when they should be striving for the other. And WE should be striving to change the press.

Did you hear that the same way about China? From what was posted on this thread it looks like the US is selling cars there. I was hoping he was going to take questions afterwards. We went to get wine and it was all gone. :(

10. I took it to mean that the US would LIKE to sell cars there |
|
but we can't because our cars won't meet China's emission standards -- the same way Mexico can't sell old-line VW Bugs in the US. And the wine wasn't too bad, LOL. I was sorry he didn't ask questions, too, but in truth I was ready to get home & get some supper.

8. I'm glad there was a big turnout |
|
All the repots I've read here on DU about Gore's meetings he's had huge turnouts which is very telling to me. :) He's still my president (same with John Kerry). And interesting on China. Did he state what their standards were and what one's we didn't meet?

11. China (Asia generally) is way ahead of US. |
|
"Anyway, it was interesting. I was surprised to learn that the reason we don't sell cars in China was because we don't meet their emission standards." example; Thailand's medical care is heads and shoulders better than ours. And if you try to tell Americans they will argue without having even been there and experienced it.
