Bush firm on prescription drug benefit deadline

SUN CITY CENTER, Fla. - President Bush has heard pleas for an extension of the deadline to sign up for new Medicare drug coverage from lawmakers, seniors advocacy groups and finally two women in his audience Tuesday. He’s rejected them all.

“Deadlines are important,”
...
“Deadlines help people understand there’s finality and people need to get after it.”

This is NOT from The Onion

1. Well, the Rs are going to be dealing with a lot of po'd old people
come November, aren't they? Notice that in the Senate during "health week" the Rs only talk about small business insurance, and not one of them address this deadline issue, in spite of the fact that Dem after Dem has gotten up to ask that the deadline be extended.

3. Sometimes, arbitrary deadlines are not so good
like pulling troops out of a country one invades illegally.

5. 'children or family members' cannot help.
I have a few friends who have hired attorneys to assist their elderly parents on this.

The attorneys say the "plan" is a hopeless maze. It is loaded with traps.

Heaven help those who sign on and then develop an ailment not covered by their particular "plan".

7. Looks like old Karl forgot jjust how vengeful Grandmas can be!
We might be old, and couldn't outrun him anymore, but our memories are still very good at the ballot box!

I know all the candidates are vieing for the youth vote, and that's fine, but the Pubs seem to be forgetting that the voters who ALWAYS VOTE are the Seniors! Pi** them off at your own peril dumb ass!

18. Amen!
I just worked a 15-hour day at the polls in West Virginia (party primary and a school levy issue) and the overwhelming majority of voters were over 50. This is probably more evident in primaries, which generally get a low turnout, but striking nonetheless because it reveals the LEVEL of committment to voting by seniors. They don't just show up at the general elections, they show up at EVERY election. Regardless of party, they understand the primary process and can have a disproportionate influence at early stages of a campaign.

"I don't think you give timelines to dictators," Mr. Bush said, speaking of North Korea's president, Kim Jong Il, and Iran's mullahs.

12. I wish just one person would ask that a$$wipes what exactly
is the downside or harm in extending the deadline. Well...except to pump more money in the pharma companies bottom line with higher prices for grandma's drugs is they miss getting enrolled by the arbitrary deadline. Why NOT extend the deadline, Chucklenuts, why not?

You and me to. I'd even fill up my tank with gas and TRAVEL and THEN pay to see it. I'd even give him a head start to study the program for a week before he tries.

10. Yeah, deadlines

“Deadlines are important,”
...

“Deadlines help people understand there’s finality and people need to get after it.”

Bush ought to get right on that one. Let's set a deadline for getting out of Iraq. Uhhhh, but he's the decider and HE decides when we need deadliness and when we don't.

14. I guess the fuck just wants them to get to the finality faster
Many of these people are very old and not capable of jumping through the hoops that have been set up. I helped my uncle get my dad signed up when they first started this. My uncle spent HOURS on the telephone trying to get information. We had to look at charts, at graphs, many of which were very small. There were disclaimers and you had to pick the one that happened to cover the MOST of your meds. After all the work, especially on the part of my uncle, there were still hitches, glitches, and hang-ups. There were waits, and stalling. Dad STILL talks about getting meds from Canada because some of the meds were STILL not covered. What about shut-ins with no family? What about people who cannot see well enough to interpret those charts and graphs? What about people who are screwed no matter which of the plethora of plans there are? This is a RIP OFF and I bet that Big Pharma is going to be even RICHER after all is said and done. Hey Shithead. Yeah you with the pretzel in your gullet! Before you go lecturing thousands of virtually helpless people about deadlines, why don't you learn a thing or fucking two about them? Say, start in Iraq and move out from there. God I wish he would just go back to his fucking pod.

17. If there was an all-time worst dictator list...
Shrub would be at the top. I don't mean worst as in the sense of cruelty. I mean it in the sense of pathetic, shit-stained leadership. Lord, to get that man to get the forms filled out properly he would have to have "My Pet Goat Teaches You How To Apply for Prescription Drug Coverage." And even then he would need all twenty of his digits (including his four monkey like opposable digits), a Dick and Jane primer, and a big bag of oreo double stuff.
