My Fundie dinner last night |
|
I was out with clients last night, and a married couple let drop that they were bedrock, fundamentalist Christian conservatives, and that they were pretty unhappy with Bush. The wife chimes in with, "but I'd still vote for him, because he's a real Christian." I said, he may be, but have you ever seen him go to church? He spends every weekend at Camp David or his ranch, except when he's running for office. Then he shows up at black churches for photo ops. Personally, I think it's all bogus, thought up by Karl Rove to scare up a few million votes."
The husband turns to her and says, what have I been telling you for the last two years? He thinks we're suckers. I added something about how I'm a social liberal but a fiscal conservative, and this guy will have added $8 trillion to our debt that our kids and grandchildren will have to pay off. They both heartily agreed. They also have kids in the 20-year-old range and are terrified of war in Iran.
I let it drop and we had a pleasant meal, but I think the lightbulb is slowly coming on out there.

4. Sounds like you handled it just right |

What an opportunity. But it makes me sick that they voted for him and !oh, no! they don't want their kids to land in a fighting war.
Congrats and I hope you didn't get indigestion from the double helping of hypocrisy.

...a good story where no one cusses someone else out, or gives them the finger or yells at them or whathaveyou. This is the way it should happen.

A year ago, they probably would have been cussing me out.

I mentioned that Clinton went virtually every week, often walking to church. She said "This isn't about Clinton, it's about Bush." First time I've ever heard a wingnut say ANYTHING isn't about Clinton.

11. The essential problem is |
|
"But I'd still vote for him because he's a real Christian."
Maybe you should have asked exactly what makes him a "real Christian". That could lead to some interesting discussions.

14. "He's a real Christian" |

At that point, I'd take a page from C.S. Lewis: Whether you're a Christian or a pagan, it still takes three minutes to cook an egg. It doesn't matter if someone's a Christian or dedicated believer in the Flying Spaghetti Monster, it still requires tact, brains, diplomacy and nuance to navigate a nation's course through the world. Nothing I've seen out of George W. Bush evinces any understanding whatsoever on his part what the consequences of his actions are. Trillions of dollars have been added to our federal deficit in just five years, a staggering sum that we'll be paying for decades; thousands and thousands of people are dead in Afghanistan, Iraq and our own military thanks to his miscalculations; gas is selling for twice what it did when Bush took office. I could go on and on.
And all of this happened without any regard to Mr. Bush's faith, whatever it may be. A faith (and warrens said it quite well) that seems to be more of a convenience to Mr. Bush, and a shield to hide behind, than any sort of guiding principle for his life or his administration.
