1. Wow...
I'd seen the damage on the news... and I knew it was a bad one just from the destruction... but wow.

The last two serious storms have come through late at night. I think I should invest in a weather radio. Don't want to be caught asleep by something like that.

5. My weather radio was nuts last night

We were under a warning but nothing ever came of it, thank goodness.
The storm was a monster--although I don't think it was quite an F5.

2. Survival Tip #208: get a house with a basement
If you want to improve your odds of surviving the climate extremes of global warming, don't live in slab house if you're in an area with violent storms and tornados.

Building codes in the Midwest should MANDATE a basement in all new housing. Gee, I wonder why they don't....

6. Well here in TX I think it's mostly due to bedrock
being so close to the surface.

But yeah, I'm definitely going to find out how much it'd cost to have a storm shelter built.

8. I didn't know that was the reason
I had always assumed it had to do with the way the houses settle so badly here. I rented a house many years ago that had a storm cellar. It was filled with water from rain and had snakes in it.:shudder:

9. "safe rooms"
are worth looking into. They cost a few thousand but seems the way to go when there is no basement. I first saw them on 60 minutes or one of those shows a few years ago. The concrete reinforced stood strong when the rest of the home was in ruins. They often reinforced the bathroom, maybe because that is a room that often doesn't have windows?

I wish everyone had one but that no one ever needs it.

10. Oh good idea!
The storm shelters I've seen in the town closest to where I live are all outside... and I hate the idea of having to run through whatever storm is going on to get to the thing.

3. Just For Curiosity, Based On What?
There was nothing in the article that references your header. Is there a different link that shows the increase in average strength overall?

Thanks. :)

4. Oh please
Do I have to pull links for all of the tornadoes throughout the midwest in recent weeks or the statistics for last years hurricane season?
Why be deliberately obtuse?
The link was for the picture. It was copyrighted.

11. No Need To Get Snippy.
And yes, for me you would need to pull those links if you declare something like that. They aren't needed for you to declare it, but for me I need them to repeat it. If it's true scientifically that tornadoes on average are becoming more frequent and more powerful, then I think that's significant and I would repeat that fact to people to inform them. But I don't repeat things that are not verifiable. Helps me remain objective and accurate, which I thrive on. So it wasn't a knock on your post, it was request for verification so that I could use it to inform others. No need to get snippy bout it.

7. Self Help for Powerful Storms
Generally: San Francisco Office of Emergency Services - we still talk about April 18, 1906 and October 17, 1989. This is the "17days.org" site

Communications: Your land lines and cell phone may be dead.
