Government Abruptly Ends Domestic Spying Probe

By DEVLIN BARRETT, AP

WASHINGTON (May 11) - The government has abruptly ended an inquiry into the warrantless eavesdropping program because the National Security Agency refused to grant Justice Department lawyers the necessary security clearance to probe the matter.

1. Folks, what we have here is a constitutional crisis.
Our government is no longer working as designed. The military has taken control and apparently, they don't care who knows it.

12. Right now, the only hope is that Arlen Specter will actually try to do
something about this. Is that wishing for too much?

11. Oh - I don't think it's the military. I think it's the civilians
in control of the military.

In any case, I DO agree we have a Constitutional crisis.

My God, what is it going to take to oust this rouge leadership?

They can't, they've committed too many crimes. They have no intention of doing so, they will not relinquish power-watch.

9. Not so quiet though. It's on the front page of AOL and in fact, the NSA
gathering of millions of phone record is a secondary story there.

And with the Shrub's buddy as Atty. Gen. what would anyone expect?

16. This is by far the MOST SERIOUS step in dismantling our const. rights.
This is not some story that will disappear - this will destroy our nation's freedoms and protections.

We have the first step in the nazification of this government. Watch for changes in "voting rights" based on ideology annd religion.

This will lead to the destruction of America as we once knew it.

22. It all goes back to the passage of the Patriot Act, and consolidation....
...of the power of the NeoCon Junta.

No, this isn't the "first step in the nazification of this government"...not by a long shot. The first step was taken when the NeoCon Junta seized power in December 2000.

17. So NSA trumps justice?
NSA is all powerful and cannot be subjected to scrutiny by the Department of Justice? Well, the obvious answer is that this cannot stand up to the lightest of scrutiny. And today I guess we know why.

The GOP scandals that have been piling up for the last several years are reaching critical mass. The only way the GOP can deal with it is to begin a massive cover up.

20. Massive Cover Up?
Gosh, that's certainly an oxymoronic phrase, isn't it?

Us American's should be rioting in the streets over this NSA issue!

How DARE THEY???????

Taking oaths to tell the truth is quaint and outdated to these guys, but they still had to take an oath to UPHOLD THE CONSTITUTION when they were sworn in, didn't they?

Who do I call to TRY THESE GUYS FOR TREASON!!!!!

30. The legal ground does not get reported
So we really don't know what it's based on.

But one symptom we have too many laws must be that the Executive branch denies information to other members of the executive branch. Is the executive branch going to litigate against itself?

Are there laws about who gets a "security clearance?" There must be some sort of standard.

31. It Gets Worse
The Justice Department was trying to get permission from the NSA to investigate participation in the NSA domestic spying program... by members of the Justice Department.

It was an internal affairs investigation.
