I am not interested in "discussing" whether or not gay couples should be
allowed to marry.

In fact, I am shocked that there are DUers that think this could possibly be an issue with more than one side.

As far as I am concerned, Non-hetero unions and marriages SHOULD have been the damned norm decades ago.

How could anyone, anyone at all in their right mind deny our citizens their civil rights?

And what the HELL is up with Howard Dean on this issue??? He wants to attract the Christian Right? I don't; I want to repel them. I want those weirdos as far away from me, and any organization I am a member of, as possible.

They can kiss my sweet white hetero ass.

AND furthermore, if a church gets any tax breaks, or accepts ANY federal or state or county or city money for any reason whatsoever under this new faith based horseshit, then they should be required to perform the wedding ceremonies happily.

10. "Equal Rights under the law!". Civil contracts for partnership marriage
should be available for any two people. Period. No religious interference should apply.

Whether or not churches are willing to perform religious weddings and recognize them as religious marriages is for each church to decide. No government interference should apply.

Gov. Dean used to say "Equal rights under the law" when asked about gay marriage. I still think it's the best response. It frames the issue better than anything else. "Equal" is "Equal".

19. Churches that accept ANY money from local, state or federal better put up
or shut the fuck up.

Sorry. And they better look happy as hell while they are performing those ceremonies too, for that matter.

4. I'm with you.
:applause:

How in the world did anyone ever think that we could peel off enough of the Christian Right to offset the loss of a community who has been so supportive of this party? Not only financially but in terms of groundwork as well. So we get a couple of fundie votes? They might vote for the dems but I don't see them spending a great deal of money for us or the time on the streets but we are going to lose a lot of the GLBT community over this I fear. I don't get it at all and I really really don't like giving up our basic platforms to woo over people who never have agreed with them anyway. There are far preferable ways to attempt that without selling out a group of people who have been tossed about forever and are tired of it.

No problem though, he can't run the program without me.
not that I am bragging, it's just a fact, and he knows it.

5. Good thoughts
But they ain't gonna happen — not in this lifetime, not on this planet.

The DNC reminds me of War singing "Why Can't We Be Friends?"

20. I think it WILL happen in the next 10 years
Civil Rights always, always throughout history have been victorious.

The problem is...is that this should have happened a very long time ago. It chaps my ass that non-heteros are second class citizens. Fuck that.

22. Of course it should've, and of course they aren't
But it became a religious issue, and with the Reagan era, thus a political one. It's gotten beyond "mere" civil rights.

I'm cynical because when the Democrats do return to power, they're gonna have so many messes to clean up, I'm afraid this one will get lost in the shuffle — especially since it's historically an issue only when the GOP is in power and starts throwing around the gay gauntlet.

12. It's as ridiculous as "discussing"...
whether or not blacks can marry or whether blacks and whites can marry.

Sadly, Dean is on the wrong side of this one.

14. To be fair....
He wasn't expressing his opinion about marriage rights. He was (incorrectly) representing the Democratic Party's platform on marriage rights. Except that he was wrong and he has now admitted that the platform does not, in fact, say "marriage is between a man and a woman." At all.

16. I have never heard even a decent argument from the right wing
on this subject.

Every argument I have ever heard always comes down to two things:

Traditional values and The Bible.

Well, lets see...

this country was obviously not founded on "traditional values", considering it was started with a revolution... "traditionalists" would have kept us under Britain's control.

and, sorry, but until the BushBots make us officially into a theocratic government, whatever The Bible says has no bearing on our laws and policy.

18. Don't hold your breath.
As long as I have worked on this, granted it has not been that long, but I have never heard one either.

When Pedro did his debate at K State Joel Oster seemed like a terribly uninformed man. He had nothing, it was almost enough to make you feel sorry for him.

21. I understand the sentiment, but discussion is necessary
for change.

The freepers feel the same way. They don't want to discuss it either. They are happy with marriage as it is now.

No discussion = no change = status quo.
