Question - I do NOT have t.v. - how is the MSM reacting to the NSA story

Of the day...

And, are Republicans trying to defend this per usual or are they worried about their own sorry azzes in November?

Overall....

What is the tone? Any change? I am so out of the loop! Can anyone summarize? Do you think this is a turning point? Thoughts?

6. Senator Goldwater was asked what he did after meeting with Nixon
. . . to tell him that he would most certainly be impeached and removed.

"I went home, had five or six drinks and went to bed."

2. I think media view this story as huge & with the potential to destroy

the Bush presidency. Jonathan Turley was dynamite on Olbermann. Sorry my analysis ain't more trenchant.

3. Pretty strongly, overall...
Sounds like Cafferty went crazy. Dobbs was asking some tough questions on his show. Olbermann is about how you would expect. Scarborough went on a tirade to begin his show.

4. ABC News sold us down the river
They downplayed its significancew, and portrayed it as basically necessary for the War on Terror.

Very disappointing.

5. That's all right. When this is all over we'll remember who our
friends were and who our enemies were.

9. I don't have TV either...so at 7:30 pm, I cruised the network news sites..
NONE of the banner stories was NSA.

CBS NEWS - Senate Passes Tax Bill

CNN NEWS - Senate Passes Tax Bill

MSNBC - Flu Vaccine

FOX NEWS - Senate Passes Tax BIll

*NOTE*
The NSA story was linked somewhere on the page on each site, but it was not the 'headline' story.

Sadness prevails.

12. I just looked, and it is under the top story catergory on all sites
But, not the pictured headlined top of page story.

Which means that it will be mentioned every hour on the cable news....

MSNBC had a bird flu headline

CBS had the tax cuts for the rich

CNN had New Orleans story

All those were the pictured/featured story. But, if it is a top news story it will get consistent, high placement mention on the t.v. So, that is good.

11. Dunno about the propaganda hour
but I turned on the set to catch the local weather, set was on a channel with one of those Hollywood gossip shows, and THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT NSA WIRETAPPING!!!!

Lordy, that is BIG. If they're telling the Enquirer and People Magazine crowd, Bush is really toast.

13. You need to go to the Lehrer report
SEN. PATRICK LEAHY:

When Attorney General Gonzalez basically stonewalled the Senate Judiciary Committee, but did admit that there may be domestic wiretapping going on. I would say what the vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee said today. He said: Significant questions remain surrounding the legality of the program and whether the White House has misrepresented the program to the public, through the selective declassification.

I'm talking about Senator Rockefeller. But the point is that we haven't done adequate oversight.

Unfortunately, the Congress has acted like a wholly-owned subsidiary of the White House and has rubber-stamped everything that's gone on. And then we usually find out through the press, whoops, they weren't following the law.

15. Here are some headlines, some priceless
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/11/AR2006051100539.html

NSA Call-Tracking Program Sparks Alarm

Yet on the front page it reads NSA Call Database Causes Stir

My my , a stir and alarm, nothing about OUTRAGE from the Washington Post

While over at the NY Times they proclaim sheepishly Bush Says U.S. Spying Is Not Widespread

Over at the LA Times, they get it right; Report That NSA Tracks Phone Calls Ignites Furor

While the folks at sacbee.com have nothing to say.

The Denver post front page reads "Bush: we don't "troll" personal lives

The Orlando: Sentinel loves the new 2007 Mercedes

And the Chicago Sun-Times fiercely proclaims President: Privacy 'fiercely protected'

I'd say the MSM is overall, pretty flaccid about the whole matter.

17. Well, BBC have it as the lead on the Americas page.
Other more pressing stories such as many dead in Sri Lanka, the London bombing report, and a South Korean scientist is charged with fraud over fake cloning are on the main front page of the BBC News website as we speak.

It's the #2 item on the BBC World Service (radio) hourly bulletin. The way they present it is so matter of fact, it makes it clear that it's pretty darned obvious the NSA has been listening in, even though it's BBC balanced and everything.

Mark.
