Lily Tomlin's Ernestine comes to mind:
"We don't care. We don't have to. We're the phone company."

1. The President's Analyst is one of my favorite movies.
The enemy of the state is TPC, The Phone Company.

C'est la guerre.

2. I was trying to remember the name of that movie.
I remember seeing it as a kid and my I remember my father telling me the phone company would be a likely culprit because EVERYTHING goes through the phone company.

Off to Netflix. Thanks!

5. "Is this the party to whom I am speaking?" . . .
"George? . . . Dick? . . . Are you there?" . . .

reminds me of a time way back when . . . I was on the district staff of a VERY liberal Member of Congress (one of only two to vote against a flag burning bill in 1966, and one of the original seven to vote against Vietnam War appropriations at about the same time), and there were times we were convinced that the FBI (or someone) was monitoring our phone conversations (strange clicks and all) . . . so, after dialing and while waiting for someone to answer, we'd always say . . .

"You listening, JEdgar?" . . . (we always called him JEdgar . . . our own little term of endearment, I guess) . . . :)
