2. His poll numbers probably got him the trip to the

former Soviet Republics for those kick-butt speeches he gave trashing Russia for playing "politics" with oil and criticizing Russia's human rights stance. Maybe they also wanted the slight deflection of interest in his sorry-ness before the NSA story hit the fan.
