1. I think that just refers to the long distance plan
I'm pretty sure you can use your local service to access any number you want, including dial up internet access.

2. We used them for years, and had trouble with our bill. Numbers
we never dialed appeared on them, we'd get bills several times a month...it was a mess. Perhaps they've straightened things out since then (it's been about 2 years). Not that I'm discouraging people from switching from their carrier...is there another carrier who also hasn't given up our numbers?

This is the rules for residential local phone service.

It just so happens that their local phone service of unlimited local calls is bundled with long distance to anywhere in the U.S. The next plan down is 5 cents a minute for all local calls (which no one with dial up access would ever get). Therefore, the only way to get ANY local calls that you aren't charged per minute for is to go with this "Unlimited" plan which unfortunately restricts you to a mere 5000 minutes of internet usage.

Rather sucks since I'd dearly love to dump my Verizon landline without having to get rid of dial up. Not that I'm particularly attached to dial up, but I'm not going to pay for DSL or cable when I'm pretty much satisfied with dial up (sure I wouldn't mind a faster connection, I'm just don't want it so much that I'm willing to pay for it).
