PETA urges Applebees to alter poultry slaughter

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas (Reuters) - Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals on Thursday prodded Applebee's International Inc. to move toward a more humane method for slaughtering chickens.

PETA, which has targeted several restaurant companies recently over this issue, failed to garner more than 5 percent of shareholder support for a shareholder resolution on the matter at Applebee's annual meeting on Thursday, but vowed to continue the fight.

"Until Applebee's starts to take concern for animal welfare ... seriously, we'll still be pushing them to do so," said PETA campaign coordinator Matt Prescott.

PETA's wants Applebee's and other restaurant chains, including McDonald's Corp., to switch to controlled-atmosphere killing (CAK), a method the group has said is already being used by some European processors.

1. Didn't the animal rights crowd work VERY HARD to stop
"gassing" pound animals, specifically because it was "cruel"? But now they WANT chickens slaughtered that way?????

I'm sorry. I want my chickens pithed, beheaded, and bled out. Not suffocated slowly.

2. I love Applebee's Southwest Chicken salad!
Max and Erma's is better, but Applebee's is pretty good.

I could care less about what PETA thinks. I noticed how many of them wear leather belts, shoes and clothing. They're chickens, not humans, cats or dogs, so they are meat, to me.

3. If you could care less [sic] what PETA thinks, then why trash them on DU?

PETA advocates a vegan lifestyle, so somebody who is speaking on thier behalf is likely wearing a convincing fake rather than leather (I have faux shoes you'd never know were faux unless you checked the label or I told you.) I suppose it's possible that you have encountered people who were involved in one campaign or the other without really embracing the whole message but I kinda doubt it as PETA does a lot of work promoting animal-free alternatives in clothing.

4. GO PETA!!!!
(Just want to get that in before the PETA bashing gets in full swing.)

Whatever steps can be taken by Progressive Animal Rights Groups to lessen the suffering of animals should be supported by Progressives of all types. This is all the more important by the incredible hate campaigns launched by corporate greed in the media, seeking to obliterate living things as cheaply as possible.

This is good for everyone.

More corpse-free options on the menu would be nice, too.

7. I'm no vegan, and in general I can't stand PETA, but this
sounds logical to me, after I looked up CAK. I'm in favor of animals being kept in a way that is as close to their natural way of living as possible, killed with as little suffering as possible, and NOT A BIT WASTED.
