Wait a minute....
Didn't Bush* try to nationalize the national guard during the Katrina Crisis? Isn't one of his goals to have federal control over the guard anyway?

Wasn't his speech last night just another attempt to get his way?

Somebody bring me up to speed on this....

1. Yes
and from the sounds of it most of the governors of the southern border states don't seem to mind handing over their power to Bush.

2. The posse comatitus dilemma
I've heard that his plan to use Nat'l Guard on the border would not violate posse comatitus, because if guardspeople from other states went to the south to work on the border, they would be working under that state's guard unit, not the federal gov't.

Additionally, they won't actually be in the field on the border with guns and binoculars, rather they would be doing administrative and other support work to free up more actual border agents to be in the field. So the guard itself wouldn't be enforcing law.

I'm not saying I think that's how it would really play out, but that's the word on the street.

3. Interesting point....
But where does it lead? Does that mean he would have control of the entire National Guard to do what he wanted anytime he wanted...Say for example, he wanted "martial law" in California?

4. I think that's it. He's trying to incite something, and you know that
will happen, and then he will declare martial law. I also thought it was an insult to all border patrol people when he said the guardsmen would train them. WTF Probably like they're training the Iraqi to take over.

6. We've got at least several hundred Border Patrol over in Iraq...

so we have to call up the National Guard to do the job of the Border Patrol, in turn, we have the Border Patrol doing duty in Iraq with the National Guard..

see this article from the WAPO

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/15/AR2006051501739.html

We have over 300 Border Patrol officers from here serving in Iraq. Why doesn't bring them home to do the job they were trained to do?" said Flores as she walked inside City Hall, which overlooks Texas and U.S. flags out front and the Mexican flag about a quarter-mile away at the border.

 :wtf:

5. Think "Vietnam", Think "advisors"......
Put the Guard on the border in "logistics" positions, let one or two somehow "become" dead and then up the ante....Do you expect American troops to "take casualties" and STILL run around unarmed???OH-OH....armed troops in the American southwest-GEE,how did that happen???
