I believe the confirmation of Samuel Alito to the US Supreme Court will be a step in the wrong direction for country. His views, the few he provided in the recent Judiciary Committee hearings, are extreme. His record as a judge has shown him to lean toward corporate clients when faced with cases of corporate interests versus individual ones.
Several times in the hearings, Alito responded: "Reasonable people can disagree on the facts." This was said in relation to cases in which he (as judge) refused a jury. The meaning of juries in our country is directly because "reasonable people can disagree on the facts." To deny a jury in a case where he himself believes "reasonable people" could disagree, is a miscarriage of justice.
His track record, including his voiced personal preferences toward long-standing laws within this country, have shown him to be an unfit candidate for a life appointment to the Supreme Court. If confirmed, his presence will throw a balanced Supreme Court over the edge. In other words, neither party has been overtly pleased with all rulings to come out of our Supreme Court. That fact alone signals that the court, as it stand today, serves the law and not any particular political or majority interests. Alito's confirmation wrecks that record and will lead our country down a very scary road.
I know you have it in your ability to vote your conscience in lieu of sinking under pressure from your political affiliation. I would urge you not to confirm Alito to the Supreme Court and to demand that the current administration put forth a candidate which would maintain the fragile balance which now exists.

I think his office has a file of form letters and pull one out at random. As useless as it is, I still think he needs to hear from those of us who don't tow the GOP line.

3. Cornfield, here's a post I just made about my letter to Grassley... |
|
I think others who look here should also try to appeal to Grassley on issues he has a stake in that Alito might work against him on. I chose to ask Grassley to ask him about his views on using "State Secrets" privilege to dismiss cases, which seems very counter to his ardent support of Sibel Edmonds as well as other inquiries into FBI wrongdoing, etc. he's had a history of. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x120459

6. I think that's why calling today might work better... |
|
His phone is probably not as busy as a lot of Dem's phones now anyway. I'd call if I wasn't about to head out right now...
