6. Now I can post my response to your locked thread |
|
Your intent was to say no one should take offense to the term and that it is most important that the use of the term be taken in context otherwise we are "idiots."
Well, you are still wrong and I think you are looking for a loop hole in order to get away with using a derogatory term.

|
Even though you know "fag" means cigarette as well as a derogatory term for homosexuals?

27. Ever hear of the word "context" ? |
|
Its cool. It lets you figure out which meaning was meant when there is more than one. http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=contextcon·text n. 1. The part of a text or statement that surrounds a particular word or passage and determines its meaning. 2. The circumstances in which an event occurs; a setting.

and i've never heard one person, ever, use tar baby as a "synonym for nigger". I've heard it in reference to something that traps you and isn't worth fighting. I think some of you heard the word at some point in your life and just assumed it was derogatory without ever hearing it used that way.
Whatever, don't use it. And call people who use it racists. That'll fix everything.
*for the record I don't think I've ever used the term, in any context.

It's a reference to one of those Brer Rabbit stories.
Or, Snow purposely used a racial epithet that didn't make any fucking sense at all in context.
I suppose we don't like him, so the latter it is! And Rove was indicted Friday.

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE
Racist Word Association Interview
Interviewer.....Chevy Chase Mr. Wilson.....Richard Pryor
Interviewer: Alright, Mr. Wilson, you've done just fine on the Rorshact.. your papers are in good order.. your file's fine.. no difficulties with your motor skills.. And I think you're probably ready for this job. We've got one more psychological test we always do here. It's just a Word Association. I'll throw you out a few words - anything that comes to your mind, just throw back at me, okay? It's kind of an arbitrary thing. Like, if I say "dog", you'd say..?
Mr. Wilson: "Tree".
Interviewer: "Tree". < nods head, prepares the test papers > "Dog".
Mr. Wilson: "Tree".
Interviewer: "Fast".
Mr. Wilson: "Slow".
Interviewer: "Rain".
Mr. Wilson: "Snow".
Interviewer: "White".
Mr. Wilson: "Black".
Interviewer: "Bean".
Mr. Wilson: "Pod".
Interviewer: < casually > "Negro".
Mr. Wilson: "Whitey".
Interviewer: "Tarbaby".
Mr. Wilson: < silent, sure he didn't hear what he thinks he heard > What'd you say?
Interviewer: < repeating > "Tarbaby".
Mr. Wilson: "Okay".
Interviewer: "Colored".
Mr. Wilson: "Redneck".
Interviewer: "Junglebunny".
Mr. Wilson: < starting to get angry > "Peckerwood!"
Interviewer: "Burrhead".
Mr. Wilson: < defensive > "Cracker!"
Interviewer: < aggressive > "Spearchucker".
Mr. Wilson: "White trash!"
Interviewer: "Jungle Bunny!"
Mr. Wilson: < upset > "Honky!"
Interviewer: "Spade!
Mr. Wilson: < really upset > "Honky Honky!"
Interviewer: < relentless > "Nigger!"
Mr. Wilson: < immediate > "Dead honky!" < face starts to flinch >
Interviewer: < quickly wraps the interview up > Okay, Mr. Wilson, I think you're qualified for this job. How about a starting salary of $5,000?
Mr. Wilson: Your momma!
Interviewer: < fumbling > Uh.. $7,500 a year?
Mr. Wilson: Your grandmomma!
Interviewer: < desperate > $15,000, Mr. Wilson. You'll be the highest paid janitor in America. Just, don't.. don't hurt me, please..
Mr. Wilson: Okay.
Interviewer: < relieved > Okay.
Mr. Wilson: You want me to start now?
Interviewer: Oh, no, no.. that's alright. I'll clean all this up. Take a couple of weeks off, you look tired.

but what is offensive about "tar baby"? Near as I know, the tar baby was a little scarecrow made out tar and used to trick Anansi into attacking it, thereby getting stuck, so he would stop eating all his families crops while they went hungry. The Tar Baby was also used again in the Brer Rabbit stories, but those are essentially just repackaged Anansi stories.

http://www.randomhouse.com/wotd/index.pperl?date=19990212The expression tar baby is also used occasionally as a derogatory term for black people (in the U.S. it refers to African-Americans; in New Zealand it refers to Maoris), or among blacks as a term for a particularly dark-skinned person. As a result, some people suggest avoiding the use of the term in any context.
