Why voting matters
Edited on Wed May-17-06 06:13 PM by linazelle
I sent this to two email loops today after reading this thread from Congressman Conyers: http://upload.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x1213885

I believe that people have been put off by voting in many ways. For decades, political corruption and sniping have proven that politicians are immoral. They lie, they steal. We all know that. But there is stealing and then there is STEALING. Taking money under the table for personal benefit pales in comparison to taking money in order to make laws against the citizens of this country.

The vote is a powerful tool. So powerful that it was once denied to blacks and women. That denial is happening again right under our noses on a very large scale. Greg Palast verified in his new book that 3.6 million votes were uncounted in 2004 without a peep from the media or the people.

Why is voting so powerful? Because the people we elect make laws in our favor or to our detriment, laws that hit us straight in the pocketbook. Your taxes, the price you pay for gasoline, food, the cost of drugs...whether your health insurance company will pay for your next medical procedure or whether the new Walmart down the street can require you to move so that they can build on your land--are all decisions made by the people we vote for. Unfortunately, the Republicans who are stealing your votes have made decisions against most Americans' best interests--that's why we are paying more for food, gas, drugs and healthcare. Why are they making those decisions? Because they are getting paid far more by the companies who make drugs and sell gasoline than they get from you or I. That should be illegal.

Consider that those who are stealing the votes want to stop "frivolous" lawsuits. Do you know that companies, like Ford Motors for instance, do cost studies when making a new model car to see how much they would have to pay if people die because of a defect on one of their cars vs. how much they would pay if they were sued over someone's death? With Republican lawmakers voting to take away your right to sue, what kind of cars do you think companies like Ford will put on the road? Voting for politicians with our best interests at heart could save your life.

Very few of our representatives are doing anything about election theft. Elections are being stolen by rigged voting machines, by delegating good votes as "provisional", by putting too few voting machines or broken down machines in black or hispanic communities to create long lines and discourage voting (like in Ohio). The news media has pretty much ignored this--but that does not mean that it is not happening.

Share this information with your friends and family. And above all else...VOTE. Your life depends on it.

1. The *more* concern about election theft, the *more* you need to VOTE !!
Democrats pray for sunshine. Republicans pray for rain.

The GOP's greatest desire is for everyone to stay home in November.

DO NOT let it happen.

Get organized and get the VOTE OUT!
