Republicans say (quite proudly) "It is better to be feared than loved" |
|
Is it? I sure don't think so but some here may, so thought I would ask...

They call us girly men for even suggesting we communicate with the rest of the world. Remember how they ridiculed Kerry for suggesting we should listen to world opinion? What do you suggest the US deserves "Respect" for in this day and age?

didn't mean to offend you. I wasn't really addressing you but just mad at what has happened to our country. We have lost "Respect". Respect for each other, respect for other countries, respect for the world itself. Respect is the most valued goal IMO. Through it Love grows. You are 100% correct and I again apologize for being snarky.

10. You can intimidate anyone into fearing you. That's the easy one. |
|
Now respect, that's another matter altogether. Respect must be earned and then willingly given. You can never completely trust someone that fears you.

and seems in governing. and no. i think it is the old way. the more progressive is a mutual respect and teaching child self think and do it the right way because it behooves them. the choices they make in life will create what they live. give them the responsibility of creation in their life. empower them.....
it takes more work, hands on, patience and time.
difference between old testament and new. difference between god rule and christ lite.

13. standard Machiavelli, except that |
|
Edited on Sat May-20-06 11:29 AM by wicasa
According to Machiavelli:
It is best (for a Prince) to be both feared and loved.
But:
If a Prince cannot be both feared and loved, then it is better to be feared.
But:
A prince absolutely cannot afford to be hated.
So just excerpting the it is better to be feared than loved does disservice to Machiavelli, and if adopting just that part of his thought leads to being hated, then they have disastrously lost the thread of the Machiavellian line of thought, and if Machiavelli's line of thought is relevant, then disastrously so.
Similarly Theodore Roosevelt's "Walk softly and carry a big stick." seems to have been bastardized to "Carry the biggest stick in the jungle and beat the bejabbers out of every body and every thing that crosses you."

and you wouldn't think that a supreme being would show so many human failings...

17. The problem with using fear |
|
is that your victim eventually learns not only to disrespect you, they learn not to fear you, and eventually that they not only can retaliate, it is their duty to do so. Fear as a motivational tool has a very finite shelf-life as the GOP is now discovering.

20. Its easier to be feared than to be loved. Love takes effort. Fear doesnt |
|

other than to provide weaponry and tools to instill fear.
Fear requires a detachment of feeling which is easier. Love requires an attachment of feeling and investment.
So responding fear is the ultimate in cowardly behavior, certainly primative behavior, because the person instilling the fear is too afraid to actually get close to others, invest and learn to love and appreciate the person they are trying to instill fear in.
They would rather overpower than connect, however there is nothing real there, and where there is no love, there is no growth.
