To all those who will attend Christian church services tonight or tomorrow |
|
Please, let us know if the release of The Da Vinci Code has led to the complete fall of Christianity and of the church now lies in ruins.
I don't mean to be snarky, but I'm a lapsed Catholic who loved the concepts behind the book. I think it makes for interesting discussions about the politics and the history of religion. I wasn't in love with the film, but I in no way see the end of religion... Christianity in particular. However, since we are on a "crusade" according to der prezinet, I just want to be sure all is well.

6. I'm not sure where I indicated that anyone was a whore. |
|
I simply think that all the protests other DUers have described, plus the ones I've read about in Italy and india are pure silly. They can protest all they like, but it it, in my opinion, rather silly. There are so many important things i nthe world to be upset over. I hardly think a Hollywood film is really going to lead to the fall of Christianity.

21. Sorry Kerry, didn't mean to infer you had insulted Mary M. Rather, |
|
I was adding, albeit lamely, to the fact that the most MSM seems to repeat over and over again is the supposed fact that Mary M. was a whore etc. etc.
I too find all of this silly inclu. the above mentioned. But...I seem to recall there was more censure from the church when it came to Deep Throat!

Mary M. is the madwoman (Excuse me, 'demon possessed woman') who Jesus had cured.
It's commonly assumed that she's also the 'woman caught in adultery' (with whom?), but that woman is unnamed.

I was amazed Crystal Cathedral's Schuller Recommends 'The Da Vinci Code'
Friday, May. 19, 2006 Posted: 9:53:37AM EST
LOS ANGELES (AP) – While some Christians have decried ''The Da Vinci Code'' as sacrilegious, one high-profile pastor is recommending the film.
The Rev. Robert A. Schuller, pastor of Southern California's Crystal Cathedral and host of TV's weekly "Hour of Power" program, said on Thursday's "Inside Edition" he planned to catch a screening of the film later in the day.
While he said he doesn't believe the movie, or the best-seller it's based on, is historically accurate, he feels the film is good fodder for discussion.
"As long as people talk about `The Da Vinci Code,' they'll discover the divinity code of who Jesus Christ is," Schuller said.
Christian leaders in China, Singapore, India, South Korea, Thailand and elsewhere have tried to get the film censored or banned. <1>

10. Whoa. No way! Schuller?!?! |
|
Now I know all of civilization is going to crumble under the weight of this film!
I guess it's ok when the Catholic's look bad. Can you imagine if this was in regards to the Protestants? Now that would be a different case entirely!

Good for Schuller. He may be on the TBN (Trinity Broadcast Network or, as I call it, Total Bullshit Network), but he's a sensible guy. It's what I've been saying all along.
He gets some points in my book for that. Ringo

Tinker Bell nearly died because not enough children believed in fairies. So I guess now God will die if too many people see "The Da Vinci Code."

12. Mr kt and I have been considering attending the liberal Episcopalian |
|
church near us. It has a great parish and everyone who attends has encouraged us. They are particularly welcoming to Catholics because, unfortunately, although we live in a very liberal area, the local catholics churches tend to be a bit full of money-grubbing types of rethugs. Not particularly religious, but they really hate to pay their fair share. How Christian-like of them. :eyes:

Having split differently than the other Protestant churches, we still have the basic form of the Mass, transubstantiation, The Nicean Creed etc. (Our Church, while made up of political liberals, has a pretty conservative liturgy - lol, We even sing parts of our Mass in Latin. Other Episcopal Churches call us "spikey" - as in "high church")

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=364&topic_id=1208957#1209177My post from the link: You know, even if Jesus was married and was a man, what is the big deal?
Personally, I'm a Christian. Even if everything in Di Vinci Code is 100% true, that would not rock my faith one little bit. I happen to believe that perhaps there is something greater than me in the universe. I don't happen to believe that Christianity is the only true interpretation. It appears to me that all religions tend to have the same focus: the live a good life and be kind and loving to others, whether you find this through Christ, Allah, a Pagan Goddess or if you find your own path outside of religion. Anyone who is so insistent that they are the only way and they are right all the time is not only delusional, but mathematically impossible since it is impossible to always be correct! But, this is just by $.02 Take it for what it's worth.

26. It's obvious from the comments of the protesters that they haven't read |
|
the book. They act as if this is shelved in the non-fiction section and they act as if Dan Brown has condemned all of Christianity. Fundamentalists Christians love to be the persecuted majority. Please. I get so tired of this. My in-laws always fret about all the "non-Christians" out to destroy their country. :eyes:  If they want to protest, by all means, protest your little hearts out. But don't be surprised when I roll my eyes and laugh at the utter non-sense over a fictional book and a fictional Hollywood Studio picture.

35. If you don't know why/how you believe as you do, everything is |
|
threatening to it. IMO, belief shouldn't depend upon others. Though it is Good to share belief if someone else wants to, you can't share what isn't really yours in the first place and it isn't yours unless you've made it so by asking and answering all of your own questions about what you do and don't believe HONESTLY.

I honestly don't understand all of the uproar. These discussions have always been a part of "Christianity". Any mature Christian has faced the issues raised by Brown's work of fictional-facts and very possibly decided long ago that the need for concrete proof, of anything about the man called Jesus, is antithetical to believing.

Anyone who thinks * is a strong leader doesn't have a lick of maturity in them. They are too simplistic to understand the complexities of history and politics in regards to religion. They can't grasp that saddam has no links to 9-11, how can we possibly expect them to understand that The Da Vinci Code is a fictional book?

Edited on Sat May-20-06 09:06 PM by patrice
The point is to demonstrate Power. It is worth Bush's "white lie" because our cause is "noble". And anyone who suffers or dies is a glorious martyr. Whether SH is guilty of 9/11 is a petty thing compared to our crusade for Democracy and Freedom which is fed with Power and spot-on Marketing. All we have to do is stay committed long enough and the rest of the World will respect our power and Iraq will be better off than it was.
