where it's just silence and then an obvious click of being hung up on? Just had one a minute ago. Was silent for about 20 seconds so I asked "If this is the NSA..." <CLick> <Dial tone>. Only happens when I'm reading DU. Oh yeah, that's all the time. never mind.

1. A lot of those are
computer automated calls from telemarketers trying to find out what hours someone is there to answer the phone. The computer just registers it if someone answers and marks it as working number.

2. Are you on the do not call list?
A lot of telemarketers use an auto dialer that only picks up for the first person to answer and everyone else get something like what you are describing. If you aren't on the list you should get on it. If you are on the list...then watch your back cuz the NSA is watching you :scared:

3. Just because you're paranoid
doesn't mean they aren't out to get you. ;-)

4. Hmm...interesting question...
especially right now. I've been getting a lot of them for two years, along with scads of telemarketers. No, I'm not on the "Do not call" list because every time I've tried, I haven't been able to get on.

But it's annoying me to the point of screaming. If I switch from dial-up to faster, non-phone connected Internet access, I may well just drop my regular phone service. Because of the above, I hardly answer it anyhow; I just tell most friends to e-mail me instead or use my daughter's number, which is in the same house.

Too bad to be driven to this, but at least it'll save me $20 dollars a month (which will no doubt get gobbled up at the gasoline pump!)

6. If noone replies to my third hello
I just say yeah well fuck you too and hang up. Most of these automateds dialers and telemarketers will not let the phone ring more than four times, time is money and they move on.
I let the phone ring at least four times before I pick up, drives my wife mad when she calls from work, but I miss most of the trash calls.
