FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WRITER WINS NATIONAL JOURNALISM PRIZE FOR SAN DIEGO CITYBEAT ARTICLE ON ELECTION INTEGRITY ISSUES

Freelance writer Miriam Raftery has been named co-winner of the 2006 Arlene Award, a national journalism prize presented by the American Society of Journalists & Authors for articles that make a difference in a community.

Raftery, a freelance journalist based in La Mesa, California, won the honor for an October 19, 2005 article in CityBeat titled “Monkey Business: A look at vote-counting mischief and the potential for more.” The article exposed serious security flaws with electronic voting machines and tabulators, including the potential for hacking and rigging elections. Raftery’s article triggered an investigation by City Attorney Mike Aguirre into the integrity of San Diego elections and inspired citizen lawsuits over election issues in two states.

Raftery has written about election integrity issues for other publications, including the East County Californian and RawStory.com. The CityBeat article led to an assignment from RawStory.com to interview a whistleblower inside Diebold, a manufacturer of election equipment. The whistleblower alleged that Diebold’s lax security and installation of illegal software patches may have intentionally altered the outcome of some elections.

One day after the whistleblower interview ran, Diebold CEO Walden O’Dell resigned. Several days later, a shareholder lawsuit was filed against Diebold alleging that the company’s inattention to serious security issues had caused stock prices to plummet. Soon after, a test in Leon County, Florida proved that Diebold equipment could be hacked to rig elections, as Associated Press reported. Since then, some state and local governments have canceled contracts for Diebold voting equipment.

Raftery shares the first place honor and $1,000 in prize money with Michele Wojciechowski. Wojciechowski’s April 19, 2005 article, "For the Love of Laurie" ran in Family Circle and has been credited with saving a teenager’s life.

Raftery praised ASJA for recognizing election integrity as an important topic.

“One of the largest and most reputable professional journalism associations in America now believes that electronic vote-rigging is no longer an Internet conspiracy theory, but an important topic worthy of serious coverage,” she observed. “Since my story ran, some mainstream journalism organizations, such as Associated Press, have begun reporting on risks posed by electronic voting systems, which are unreliable, unverifiable, and insecure against hacking. Despite such reports, the number of Americans who will be voting on insecure electronic machines in the next election has increased. I urge my colleagues in the media to inform the public about the threats to our democracy posed by electronic voting.”

A freelance journalist for over 20 years, Raftery has authored over 2,000 articles published in national and regional publications. Previously a columnist for the San Diego Union-Tribune, her works have also appeared in Décor & Style, Ranch & Coast, Woman’s Day, Arizona Highways, Writer’s Digest, Nutrition Business Journal, and other publications. Her company, Writer Ink (www.writerink.com) is located in La Mesa, California.

6. Thanks, all! In my acceptance speech I urged other journalists
to cover this important topic.

Maybe some listened. Even Newsweek ran a story on Diebold this week!

13. We CAN make a difference, if we all speak out and don't stop!

Tonight I had an interesting conversation with a Republican candidate for Assembly. He was talking about areas where Dems and Reps might agree. I said the one issue I wished Reps would take seriously was election theft via electronic voting.

I got his attention when I pointed out that in his own primary race (with 5 Republicans running), it could easily be rigged to allow his opponent (who is endorsed by our REP Congressman) to win.

I think I converted him from the dark side, at least on that issue. ;-)

61. Liberty Belle congratulations--please read Greg Palast's book
I was focused on electronic voting until I saw an interview with him recently on FSTV. His summary of how 2000 and 2004, especially, were stolen revealed that voting machines are only one of many evils when it comes to election theft. Providing too few machines, providing faulty machines, provisional ballots--are the other threats. There is an all-out war on voting and it's coming from many directions.

Congrats again.

You help keep me inspired to stay and stick it out here in San Diego for better times for progressives some day. Hopefully we can help get Francine elected here and defeat the Republican cabal on the Board of Supervisors, etc. that are all Republicans and lead to suspicious behavior around here at election time.

Two issues that might be worth looking into around here that you might want to look at:

1) That issue about Brian Bilbray running illegally since he's actually a resident of Virginia (if they rule that) might be made to serve the Republican Party too. I don't know what the rules are on elections here, but could it happen that the next week or two, some court at the last minute would rule that Bilbray would have to be pulled off the Republican ticket for this issue, and the Republicans would be allowed to replace him with Roach then. Perhaps they've already "planned" for this possibility, and Roach might along with the RNCC, etc. be putting together an onslaught of ads for him with his minefield of cash to go after Busby the last week before the election. If they wait until then for this to happen, it might be harder for Busby and the Democrats to respond, if they don't have ads to go after Roach and respond to his ads then. I'm thinking it would be interesting to research to see if any moves like shooting "pro Roach/anti Busby" ads are taking place now or not.

2) Secondly, the recent issues of the fraud being here in Southern California to pay off people to either fraudulently or legitimately try to get voters to reregister as Dems might also have a hidden agenda of trying to get more Dem voters to join the "newly registered" voters (which might happen even if they reversed fraudulent reregistrations). If a lot more Dems are put into the newly registered category, then perhaps more Dems will have their registrations thrown out with the BS DMV matching algorithms that McPherson's new validation software is doing that is disenfranchising some 26% of who it tries to register now. Perhaps that is the right's means now to try to win the Busby election and other votes this coming June (and even in the November election in the Fall).

You've been good about pursuing such issues in the past. If you could check on these now, it would serve us well here I think!

73. Cali - You've got some good thoughts, as usual!
If it's any consolation, I've heard that in LA, more Republicans were kicked off the rolls than Dems by the new system. But it's still a concern, and ought to be watched closely.

locally that refused to run it. I couldn't have written for that publication myself, as I have a copyright infringement lawsuit filed against them, but wanted the story out so badly that I sent piles of documentation to the publisher. She ignored it (no doubt because the owners are big GOP donors), so I pitched the story to CityBeat instead.

Guess I'll laugh about it all the way to the bank, cashing my half of that thousand dollar prize check. ;-)

21. Really? That's amazing
That fact in itself is extremely telling. Editors these days no longer seem to require reams of evidence and background research.

Got a juicy rumour? Let's run with it, just quote an obscure article or some dubious study and you're in!

Enjoy that share of $1000. Don't spend it all in the same gas station.

You crammed a helluva lot in there!

I had never heard that potential motive for election stealing -- to play the stock market right before the election, based on results of hacking. Just one more motive....

Good work! (I remember Andrew Gumbel did a nice City Beat piece on elections a while ago too)

You might want to send a shortened version of the press release with the link to the article to:

Warren Stewart -- warren@votetrustusa.org

And, see if Vote Trust USA wants to publish the story about the prize w/link.

Also, you could send the same thing to:
