Company says police asked it to delay reporting incident
Wells Fargo & Co. is sending letters to an undisclosed number of home-mortgage customers, acknowledging that the company delayed telling them about a potential security breach of their confidential information, including names, addresses and Social Security numbers.
Wells Fargo said it agreed to keep the suspected theft of a computer loaded with customer information quiet for months at the request of law enforcement officials, whom they refused to identify.

The company confirmed the computer was reported missing during the first part of the year, and it was not a laptop.

The company further stated that law enforcement "no longer believes notification would interfere with their investigation, and we are contacting you now to alert you of the situation and suggest ways to reduce any potential risk to you."
