Senate targets illegal immigrants' employers

Would be fined $20,000 for each unauthorized worker

Wednesday, May 24, 2006; Posted: 4:52 a.m. EDT (08:52 GMT)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Senate voted Tuesday to fine employers who hire illegal immigrants up to $20,000 for each unauthorized worker, providing teeth to a broad immigration bill before sending it to a final vote later this week.

Employers would have to check Social Security numbers and the immigration status of all new hires within 18 months after money is provided to the Homeland Security Department to expand the electronic system for screening workers.

"This is probably the single most important thing we can do in terms of reducing the inflow of undocumented workers, making sure we can enforce in a systematic way rules governing who gets hired," said Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois.

The amendment passed 58-40. Opponents said the verification system would take years to implement and complained that workers deemed illegal could still hold on to jobs until their appeals are exhausted.

1. About time....
This is where to enforce the issue. People come here for jobs, plain and simple, not the tourist attractions. I would wish for a tamper proof method of documentation, onerous and Draconian fines for employers who violate the law and no wall would be needed. We don't need to dehumanize people for wanting something better and they should be treated with dignity. Greedy employers who exploit these people need to spend some time getting some sun and a lovely facility operated by the U.S. Government on the Caribbean Island of Cuba. We don't need to shut down Gitmo, just change the resident population with a few CEO's and the rest would be encouraged to behave themselves.

3. More Sen posturing. "Forget the amnesty. Look NOW we are getting tough!"
The US Senate is determined to give employers a free ride. THERE WILL BE NO MONEY FOR ENFORCEMENT. This is a rerun of the disaster 1986.

By the way V. Fox is in the US taking about anything but the fact 1 in 5 Mexicans has left his country.

5. All for show
You will never see a big corporation fined any money or suffer any jail time for execs. This is GOP hot air as usual. Meanwhile, we are going to be importing poverty and exporting jobs.
