DA charges 2 in April war protests

Wednesday, May 24, 2006

By Tommy Witherspoon

Tribune-Herald staff writer

Two of the 14 war protesters arrested last month for putting up tents along the road to President Bush’s ranch near Crawford were charged late Tuesday, McLennan County District Attorney John Segrest said.

The protesters, who set up their tents to test the legal validity of newly passed ordinances near the ranch, were arrested April 14 after declining to obey instructions from McLennan County sheriff’s deputies to remove the tents.

The group included 11 protesters who had been arrested for the same offense during the Thanksgiving break, when Bush was staying at the ranch. On both occasions, the protesters were aligned with famed peace activist Cindy Sheehan, although she was not arrested during either event.

Segrest told the Tribune-Herald he learned that prosecutor Melanie Walker had filed the charges against Em Hardy of Austin and Hiram Myers of Oklahoma only after business hours Tuesday. The misdemeanor charges carry a maximum penalty of 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine.

2. Hiram Myers must be threat
Hiram was arrested earlier this month protesting at the Halliburton Shareholder's Meeting in Duncan,OK.
He's the one who tore down the fence & crossed the line to give a "people's indictment" to Halliburton's CEO. They arrested him instead.
