Shadow's taxicab reports 5/23/06
Edited on Wed May-24-06 07:31 AM by shadowknows69
Not much to report lately from the younger soldiers but I had an interesting customer in the cab tonight. No insight to report on upcoming events I'm sad to say but he fascinated me none the less. He was probably in his early 60's and we had a 40 minute ride together so we talked. Got on the subject of the military somehow and I learned he was a Vietnam Vet but it sounded like he was in covert communications and intelligence work and he said he spent a good part of the war in other places. In particular he mentioned he was in Korea near the DMZ when N Korea shot down one of our AWACS planes. 4/14/69 I think the date was. He said that "The balloon almost went up that day" and we were pretty close to the 2nd Korean war right there. He was in Seoul at the time and they were getting ready to mobilize him to Japan. Apparently for the sole reason that he knew too much about our Korean defenses to risk being captured. Pretty cool huh? I smell bullshit pretty well too and this man didn't stink of it. He was pretty hawkish about a lot of things. Made mention how protesters really hurt the war effort although he was referring to Vietnam mostly I think. Told stories of protesters really mistreating a lot of the vets coming back then. Maybe some DU vets can confirm or deny this. I told him I thought that was a lesson that the new anti-war movement definitely learned and we never hate the warrior, only the war. You can be proud of me DU in that I didn't take my usual semi-neutral stance on things and we had a nice respectful debate about a few things. Asked how he thought Iran would pan out. He made some semi-sweeping generalizations about his experience with muslims. Not overtly racist but stereotypical. He said you can never be sure about them or something. That they do things without thinking. Ok I guess that is pretty racist. Whatever, just relating details. My point is he didn't seem to say these things with the malice I sense from some.

Anyway Iran. he said he thought the leader was crazy. I made mention that ours doesn't seem especially stable at times (ok I was a little diplomatic)he concurred. He agreed that the army is pushing soldier too hard and I related some of my experiences to him. He said that if Iran's people wanted to let their leader take them back to the 16th century then we'd probably oblige them. Pretty creepy. I said we should be equally wary of lunatics like The Phelps clan and he knew who I was talking about and agreed that Phelps would probably use a nuke if he had one. One more interesting tidbit. He claimed he used to run an early warning radar system that use to be on a local water tower near me. He said it was setup that if an unknown threat came into range it would immediately send a signal to a local airbase to scramble ready 5 fighters. No human input necessary. Makes you wonder how we missed those off course airliners huh? All in all a very cool talk. Gives me hope that people with some essential differences can come together on other things and important things. Anyhoo another small adventure in the nights of The Shadow.

3. Despite my anti-war stance yes very well
Not huge but that was probably because I was a tad late in getting him due to shoddy directions from my dispatcher.

4. Hey, don't blame HIM if he told the truth they'd have to kill him!
Consequently MI vets spin really fabulous yarns...

From Ballad of the ASA...

Drunken soldiers, always high
Dropouts from old Sigma Chi
Men who bullshit all the way
We're the men of the ASA.

We're not trained to fight or kill
But we'll always drink our fill
Men who drink can seldom fight
And ASA drinks through the night.

5. Cool little limerick
I'm always amazed what people will tell me in my cab, often without my fishing for it, true or not. I had a couple the other night who decided to volunteer the reason the male was not with his previous SO, who was now stalking them, was because he caught her in bed with other men...And canines. Not necessarily at the same time but I didn't press for clarification on that point. I didn't ask for that story from them but now I have to live with it. :wtf:

15. Memories, memories ...
Of course, the ASA at Long Vei Special Forces Camp (about four miles west of Khe Sanh on QL-9) had to fight through the night on 2/7/1968. Those ASAers got their war stories the old fashioned way .. they earned 'em. Otherwise, no truer song were ever sung than the "Ballad of the ASA."

8. He didn't actually say "I did Covert communications and intelligence work"
That's the impression I got from some of the details.

not that I'm one to beg usually. we've been having a rash of gang related cab-armed robberies lately and I've already had my share of guns against the back of my head thanks so if anyone out there anywhere has a job I can do I'm all ears and you will never find a more appreciative or loyal employee. this is not the career path I'm supposed to be on.B-)

7. I smell BS... I'll tell you why
The crap about vet abuse upon returning. It has been pretty much established that was made up in the WH.

The only people I hear reporting that now are usually RW, and full of shit. I never had a problem with any of the peace people.

Also, it is VERY rare for a true Intel/SpecOps guy to say that is what he did, and then only to someone else in the community. Not saying it aint possible, but highly unlikely.

It was my opinion of what he said he did at a few of his posts. Communications. Surveillance and early warning radar etc. And as far as the abuses he never did utter the famous words "they spit on me" but said a lot would get in his face and yell. Also said the South Korean people really hated us being there. Don't know if that's the case or not now. Appreciate the input...uh, i'm just gonna call you scooter lol, I'm just bringing it to DU unfiltered. We'll sift it all out together.

10. Yeah, I see that now
No, I don't mean to nit pick, and I like your posts from the post, so to speak.

Yes, scooter is fine.

South Koreans are just like everyone else, some loved us, some hated us, some on the same day. When I was there, I was told where not to go, so I went there anyway and had a great time. It is all in how YOU act too.

Bartenders, Cab drivers, shrinks and priests. People will tell us anything, and I'll bet I get a lot better stories than priests.

13. One more thing
Where this guy lived. He definitely didn't get it off a regular military salary. or he's an heir, or he's won the lottery. he flies to Fla to work every week. didn't catch what he does now because he didn't drop it.

12. I agree - a few isolated incidents...
...got all the attention. The RW and media grabbed it and painted the whole anti-war movement with it.
The entire anti-war movement's primary objective was to bring the troops home - alive.
Certainly, the atrocities that came to light didn't help - but the animosity between vet and protester was created, it was not intentional.
It seems to me that some of the most fervent anti-war sentiments are held by vets. They know the horror, they know the senselessness.

14. and I definitely got that sense from him.
Edited on Wed May-24-06 08:26 AM by shadowknows69
even though he was kind of outwardly gung ho, when i breached the subject of meeting soldiers on their third tour he made the comment "that's three tours too many" the more I think about it he didn't really give a clear indication on his position on the war on terror and I guess I dropped the ball by not digging but I plead 4am and 11 hours into a 12 hour day.

I love to read these! He sounds like my fil. Ex-navy, 'Reagan republican'... but he thinks * is nuts. The thing that killed it for him? Faith based initiatives, amazingly enough... He is a strong advocate of sep church/state...
