Senate to vote on the Voter ID Amendment!
Edited on Wed May-24-06 09:53 AM by TayTay
Don't let the McConnell Amendment pass! It is a bad bill and a bad idea. We should not be putting obstacles in front of people who want to register and excercise their sacred right to vote. This Amendment will come to the floor and be subject to between 2 minutes and 1 hour of debate. Don<'t let the Senate disenfranchise millions of American voters. Stop this sham amendment![br />
Call people and call all the third party agencies you can think of and tell them to alert their membership to this outrageous amendment. (ACLU, People for the American Way, MoveOn, etc.)

SA 4085. Mr. McCONNELL submitted an amendment intended to be proposed by him to the bill S. 2611, to provide for comprehensive immigration reform and for other purposes; which was ordered to lie on the table; as follows:

Stop this!

13. It is NOT a done deal. The McConnell amendment was killed.
Senator Dodd made a motion to table the amendment, which meant it required 60 NO votes to pass.

It received only 49 NO votes, and therefore was killed. Thank God!

I was watching all those traitorius Republicans vote to disenfranchise all the people who didn't go and get their picture taken for the ID card.

2. Kill this amendment
It's not right that the voting rights of millions of Americans be subject to a quick amendment, a debate of between 2 minutes and 1 hour.

Call your senators. Ask them not to vote for the McConnell Amendment!

4. Someone needs to explain this me...
I've always had a voter ID. You can't vote without one. It has always been that way, so why is everyone all mad about this bill?

The Constitution says clearly that you need to be a US citizen and legal age in order to vote. Why is it wrong for you to prove this?

6. Supposedly, ID has been shown at the time of registration.
It's yet another means of discouraging people from voting... "You're not a member of
our club."

7. If you arn't a citizen, you shouldnt be voting
Sorry but I agree with this amendment. You can't just walk into another country and expect them to hand you a ballot. It doesn't work that way.

I don't really care how much they work or how long they've been here. If they arn't a citizen, they don't get the right to vote. It's that simple.

8. Not the problem. The amendment wants a National ID card for voters
Everybody will have to get a new id, wait in line, and who do you think are the people the least likely to have the time and money for this ID? Let me guess.

10. So what do you prefer?
Just letting any Joe or Jose off the street walk into any polling location and hand out a ballot?

I mean I had to wait 4 hours for my Driver's License and another 2 hours for my state voter ID card. Waiting in line at a government office has been the norm for decades.

11. Why solve a problem that does not exist?
Edited on Wed May-24-06 10:48 AM by Mass
People are currently disenfranchised because they are not allowed to vote, not because non-citizens vote. It is a straw man.

14. You must have time to kill
most working poor-those who work 2-3 low-wage jobs to make ends meet-will be the ones who can't get time off work to get these ID cards.

9. I believe that is why we have voter registration cards....
As long as you have your voter registration, that should be enough... Id should be used when voter registration is absent.. That prevents non-citizens from voting...

12. Not GErmaine, so it's DEFEATED for today
This amendment was declared NOT germaine to the Immigration bill. So it will NOT be voted on.

It's gone, for now. (I'm sure it will come back thought. Ah vigilance.)

Thanks!
