Combat Diary: The Marines of Lima Company on A&E tomorrow night.
Edited on Wed May-24-06 12:07 PM by peacebaby3
On August 3, 2005, fourteen Marines were killed in western Iraq. It
was the single worst roadside bombing of the Iraq War.

Eleven of the dead were members of Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th
Marines, a reserve unit out of Columbus, Ohio. Lima 3/25 was harder
hit than any other combat unit in the Iraq War. In just seven months,
the Marines of Lima Company received 59 Purple Hearts—23 were awarded
posthumously.

With extraordinary access to combat videos and photographs shot by the
Marines of Lima themselves, as well as candid interviews with the
Marines and their families, Combat Diary: The Marines of Lima Company
provides an unprecedented and harrowing window into the harsh reality
of war.

6. Story from Ohio on this film
http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060525/NEWS01/605250381

As John Dyer of Evendale walked into a dark theater here Tuesday night to watch a film on Lima Company, his son's Marine Reserve unit, what he wanted more than anything was the one thing he could not have - his son Christopher at his side.

Instead, what he saw was his son on a movie screen - a short, choppy piece of videotape from a hand-held camera, an image of a handsome, gap-toothed Marine relaxing with his brother Marines in bivouac, strumming a guitar and singing "Puff the Magic Dragon."

The scene was taped last August, not long before the 19-year-old Princeton High graduate and 10 of his comrades took off down a dusty road near Haditha in western Iraq in a 30-ton amphibious assault vehicle. They hit a land mine and died - all of them - in a massive explosion.

Dyer did not know whether to laugh or cry at the sight of his son, the musician and would-be pilot whose dreams ended that day, clowning for the camera.

"I laughed," Dyer said. "It was all I could laugh about."

7. Looks like it is repeating.
I haven't seen it yet, but I did record it.

Here's the repeats:

8 p.m. Saturday; midnight and 1 p.m. Sunday; 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Memorial Day; and 11 a.m. Saturday, June 3.

8. I'm going to kick this one more time because this was really intense.
One of the interesting things about this as well is that these Marines were in Haditha where the massacre happened. They came back home in November. One of the Marines talks about how he had gotten to the point of wanting to kill every person not wearing a US uniform and came close to doing it and he knew it was time for him to leave.

I think this is a must see. You won't agree with everything said and done, but you may be surprised what you learn and the bigger message is exactly what most of us know. The movie isn't very political and straight from the soldiers and some of the things these guys say without "saying it" will surprise you. The directors said they dared anyone to watch this DOC and not cry and I will tell you I cried several times.
