Empty suit Mitt Romney makes SURPRISE visit to Baghdad

BOSTON - Gov. Mitt Romney made an unannounced visit to Iraq this week, an effort to visit Massachusetts troops and understand an international hotspot that could also burnish his foreign policy credentials should he run for president in 2008.

The Republican governor met with military and diplomatic leaders in Baghdad on Tuesday and Wednesday, before returning to a United States staging area in Kuwait City, Kuwait, according to his communications director, Eric Fehrnstrom.

Romney is scheduled to stop in Pakistan on Thursday en route to Afghanistan, where he will meet with President Hamid Karzai. After an overnight stay at the U.S. embassy in Kabul, Romney will fly to Ramstein Air Base in Germany on Friday. The governor is scheduled to return to Massachusetts on Saturday.

The opening stage of the trip, which began Monday with a military flight to Kuwait from Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington, was made under a reporting embargo requested by the Department of Defense. Pentagon officials said advance publicity about visits by high-profile U.S. delegations can inspire violence by Iraqi insurgent groups.

2. These photo op stop overs at the Baghdad Airport are getting
increasingly pathetic. The Mass Guard may have appreciated the fly in/fly out, I guess, those that saw it...

5. I've been to Canada. Does that give me foreign policy credentials?
I think traveling in a MGB, tent-camping along the way, for 3 weeks through Canada is just as useful as Romney dropping into the Green Zone for a day or so. I met a lot of Canadians and got their opinions on a lot of things every time that little car broke down.

11. Yes, yes it does. Your credentials have been "burnished".
Meanwhile, I took a cruise through the Panama Canal once, and am now an expert in international maritime law.

and biggest supplier of oil, I would suggest that you're probably better and more appropriately qualified than somebody who has spent 6 hours in the Green Zone.

7. Running for President much, Mitt?
I worked with Romney and the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Winter Olympics in 2002.

He's definately done "something" with his hair since then.

And, it's not for the better.

I grew up in Michigan with his father as Gov for about a eon. Nice? Not so much.

But that's why Mitt got stuck with that silly first name (shape of the state of MI.)

9. OK, if Romney is cleared to go, what about Edwards or Gore or
any other DEMOCRATIC candidate? Or is it only Thuglican wanna-bes who get the military escort and the chance for a photo op?

13. Wait until they delve into his Mormon faith, though
I don't think the country is ready for a Mormon president any more than it's ready for a Jewish president or even a woman president. Some Christian denominations even call Mormonism a "cult" -- watch for Falwell, Robertson, et al. to ensure that Romney ISN'T the Thug nominee.

18. Is "Mitt" his real name?
or is it short for "Mitchell"?

or is it some infantile nickname that stuck because it fit?

New rule:

NO presidents with cutesy, trendy, 'waspish' names.
