Influences Of Protest MusicProtest music continues to haunt civilization and hopefully always will. It certainly dates back past ancient troubadours singing songs with a message. During the civil rights movement, there were the likes of Harry Belafonte, the Weavers, Peter Yarrow, Josh White and Bob Dylan inspiring African Americans who wanted nothing more than to exercise their constitutional rights.
The antiwar music of the Vietnam era brought the children of the 60’s to a new level. Musicians of this generation took the guitar strumming troubadour from the coffee houses, then plugged them in and sent the music message into college dorm rooms and homes across America.
This generation was not going to sit idly by while the government lied to the people about Vietnam. This generation was the first to see combat veterans returning prior to the end of a U.S. war and exposed many of the lies and pretzel logic that put us in Vietnam in the first place. The social climate, plus musicians who became a collective conscience through their lyrics and music became the foundation of ending a barbaric and unjust war, which the government tried to hide by calling it a "conflict" or a "police action."
