Mega-church minister linked to paramilitary video game(Rick Warren)

Imagine: you are a foot soldier in a paramilitary group whose purpose is to remake America as a Christian theocracy, and establish its worldly vision of the dominion of Christ over all aspects of life. You are issued high-tech military weaponry, and instructed to engage the infidel on the streets of New York City. You are on a mission - both a religious mission and a military mission -- to convert or kill Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, gays, and anyone who advocates the separation of church and state - especially moderate, mainstream Christians. Your mission is "to conduct physical and spiritual warfare"; all who resist must be taken out with extreme prejudice. You have never felt so powerful, so driven by a purpose: you are 13 years old. You are playing a real-time strategy video game whose creators are linked to the empire of mega-church pastor Rick Warren, best selling author of The Purpose Driven Life.

The game, slated for release by October 2006 in advance of the Christmas shopping rush, has been previewed at video game exhibitions, and reviewed by major newspapers and magazines. But until now, no fan or critic has pointed out the controversial game's connection to Mr. Warren or his dominionist agenda.

Time magazine has described Mr. Warren as one of the nation's most influential Evangelical Christian leaders. He describes himself as a "stealth evangelist" and describes his training programs as "a stealth movement, that's flying beneath the radar, that's changing literally hundreds, even thousands of churches around the world." He claims that he has sold tens of millions of copies of The Purpose Driven Life by developing a worldwide network of pastors.

The international director of Mr. Warren's Purpose Driven Church, Mark Carver, is a former investment banker who serves on the Advisory Board of the corporation created in October 2001 to develop and market this game. The creators plan to market their game using the same network marketing techniques that Mr. Warren used to turn The Purpose Driven Life into a commercial success. For example, they plan to distribute their merchandise through pastoral networks, especially mega-churches.

This game immerses children in present-day New York City -- 500 square blocks, stretching from Wall Street to Chinatown, Greenwich Village, the United Nations headquarters, and Harlem. The game rewards children for how effectively they role play the killing of those who resist becoming a born again Christian. The game also offers players the opportunity to switch sides and fight for the army of the AntiChrist, releasing cloven-hoofed demons who feast on conservative Christians and their panicked proselytes (who taste a lot like Christian).

17. Oh, I dunno
Some of us have gleaned what looks like this kernel of truth from the teachings of Jesus:

or Ego-maniac.

Or Both.

Sick. Pro Life?

Angelic roles are not self-claimed by the truly Angelic.

Jesus and his Friends were/are humble people who wouldn't kill, even to defend themselves, let alone for some political abstraction.

3. Uh Huh
It'll totally suck. The only people who will possibly consume this game are Bible-beaters themselves (probably with gorges rising over the thought of a coming apocalypse) or gamers who just want to make fun of what will most likely be a hilariously bad piece of shit.

Christian videogames are a laugh and a half.

5. I agree the game will probably suck
But it did seem a bit hard to swallow from reading it. I did some more research on it, see below.

If Nintendo made these games available on its Virtual Console on its up and coming system the Nintendo Wii. Put it under an Idiot's section of their distribution network.

themselves, that is if it's a real church, it makes itself obsolete by becoming ogranic in people's lives with one another. Hence, no walls, no priests or ministers. Just us taking care of one another.

7. Oh for crap's sake! Warren is "supposed" to be moderate ...
But no ... turns out he's not only a theocrat, he's intent on turning 13 year-olds into KKKillers for Khrist(TM) ... coming to a MegaChurch near you. Guess we know the purpose he's driving at now, huh?

9. Based on what I looked up since then, the game sounds like crap, but...
Edited on Mon May-29-06 10:39 PM by ButterflyBlood
Not as described. It's a real time strategy game based on the Left Behind books directly. Apparentely it takes place after the rapture and you can play as either the forces of the good people left on Earth or the UN controlled forces of the Antichrist. The article gets it wrong first with its description as you as a "foot soldier", which obviously you don't play as in an RTS. Just a fundie-friendly version of Starcraft or Command & Conquer, not quite as described, although I'll have to see the final product to be sure.

The rather over the top description there reminds me though of the exaggerated and largely incorrect descriptions of the Grand Theft Auto games you kept hearing on the news. And I'm not anymore big on left wing anti-video game propaganda then I am on right wing.

22. If it's based on the Left Behind books.. it'll be graphicly violent.
And it will be a piece of violent shit. The kids books are almost as bad.

33. Well it's got a T rating, so there probably won't be significant blood
Although there is still a point here to be made about fundie hypocrisy. But I like violent video games, so who cares.

Just kidding. I wouldn't want to take a chance on erasing my bankcard.

15. I agree this game is going to suck
But I don't agree with how the article acts like it's made for children. Unless I missed something, it isn't. Even if kids do end up playing it (which they probably will), I don't think it's much worse then any other violent game for them.

21. Another reason I'm a happy athiest!
There are not enuff swear words available to express how I feel about the mothefuckas who use religion to spread hate.. and really to make a buck. Not enuff words... Sometimes I hope there IS a god! So that assholes like Warren will get a chance to answer for their ungodly behavior.. while I would fare quite well, as a nice human being that acts a helluva lot more christian that most of the christian folks I meet. (okay, except for the swearing, but I don't think that if there's a god, he or she would really care about that).

26. This is terrifying
You all might be laughing but there are many people out there who will buy into this crap. It will shape the minds of their children and make them believe that killing anyone who doesn't agree with their religion is not only ok but expected of them by their "god."

Frightening doesn't begin to cover it. I'm sure the main stream Republicans were laughing 26 years ago at the idea right wing christian nutballs could possibly take over their party.

Edited on Tue May-30-06 06:01 AM by Perky
The only link beteen te two is that on of the guy who sits on the Warren's baord is a a feveloper.

I have no use for the game and little theological use for Warren byt the linkt showing Warren's involvement here is specious. The linkage is worthy of the GOP Spin machine.

I alwo would hardly called Warren a Dominionist. If you are going to criticize Church leaders how about a little research? The link here is nothing but guilt by assoiciation !

28. I love that the article even threw in Gaddi Vasquez
(Snip)

"The Director of the Peace Corps, Gaddi Vasquez, read a message of support from President George W. Bush. Then Mr. Warren called on his flock to support a $40 million capital campaign to expand missionary training facilities at Saddleback's 120-acre campus in Lake Forest, California. He pledged participants to achieve a purpose-driven ministry overseas."

29. Didn't Rod and Todd Flanders have a game like this?
When it converted people, they went from being whatever they were to wearing a business suit.

Whatever, I don't see this game as any worse than any other video game that the player kills electronic images that are supposedly human. I'm not likely to play them whether they are secular or christian.
