Abortion Ban to be on The Ballot in South Dakota
Abortion Ban on The Ballot in South Dakota!!!

05/30/2006
Opponents Of Abortion Ban To File Petitions

Opponents of an abortion ban passed by the South Dakota Legislature say they've collected nearly 38,000 signatures to refer the measure to a statewide public vote in November.

Members of the South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families were headed to Pierre today to file the petitions with Secretary of State Chris Nelson.

The measure passed by the Legislature this year would ban nearly all abortions in South Dakota. It is intended to prompt a court challenge aimed at overturning the 1973 Roe-versus-Wade ruling that legalized abortion.

Nelson's office will have to verify that the petitions contain just under 17,000 valid signatures to place the question on the November ballot.

2. And may every woman and every forward thinking male in SD
get out and cast their vote. The outcome may shock those fundies in the legislature who think they can control women's lives.

3. Fantastic News
Now it's time to start informing everyone in SD that the fundie whack-jobs running that State refuse to allow exemptions for victims of rape and incest and I'm pretty sure the bill has a good chance of going down.

5. Prediction: Abortion ban overwhelmingly supported.

(I'm not saying this would pass in, say, New York, but I'll
bet it's a slam-dunk in South Dakota and the timing of the
election could be arranged to get this sort of thing through
in most states in the union; just ensure it's voted when
there's no other reason for abortion supporters to turn out.)

8. Most people, even fundies,
think there should be exceptions for rape and incest-at least the women fundies I know. If you put it to a fundy man that he would have to support a child that wasn't his because his wife was raped, I think they would even object.

Well, the Lakota People may still need to put up that clinic on their rez if you are correct.

12. I've given up all hope that people will support their own rights.
I've given up all hope that people will support their own rights.

One only need look at the post after post here where DUers argue
*AGAINST* free speech rights, *AGAINST* gay rights, and certainly
*AGAINST* women's rights (including the right to control their
own fertility in every way necessary).

Then, aside from the basic disagreement on the merits of the issue,
liberals and progressives can't seem to be motivated to get up
off their asses and actually vote, so even if there folks of
our persuasion in SD, and even if Diebold (etc.) allowed their
votes to be counted, *GETTING* the votes cast in the first place
is a Herculean act.

Hence my pessimisim re. the SD vote.

(But I'd be glad to be proven wrong, BTW.)

11. Time to move to the offensive.
It's time to put the spotlight squarely on the CRIMINAL penalties the fascists want to impose on medical workers. Ultimately, the logic leads to charging women as murderers, as they now do in El Salvador. That country has the most extreme, and consistent, ban on abortion. Most people, even in South Dakota, don't want this agenda.
