Nearly half of Mississippi blacks approve of Trent Lott's job? WTF?
http://www.surveyusa.com/client/PollReport.aspx?g=473d01c9-f104-4510-be9f-9493196f0e0f

I was going through the latest batch of SurveyUSA polls, and it illustrates a senator, governor or the president's approval rating by a rather large degree of lines: age, sex, race and such.

According to SurveyUSA, in the last Mississippi polling of Trent Lott's job approval rating, 47% of black Mississippi citizens approve. I will never understand how this is possible, even taking into account a divergence of cultures between a black person living in Detroit, and a black person living in Biloxi. George W. Bush, to his credit, has never had a verbal blunder as offensive to blacks as Lott's now infamous remarks back in 2002, yet only won 11% of the black vote in 2004.

Yet Lott has a 47% approval of black Mississippi citizens? So how does that work? Is every black conservative in the country stuffed into Mississippi? Are there a million little weasely Alan Keyes running around down there? Mississippi has a fairly large share of blacks, too, about 36% of the total population - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mississippi#Racial_makeup_and_ancestry

Any thoughts on this?

2. Different cultures
Just a thought here -- but blacks in Mississippi don't think Trent's comments were meant in the way that most people throughout the nation understood them.

Also, blacks here are far more likely to be familiar with Trent's long-time civil rights support. For instance, Trent as Student Body President was instrumental in the enrollment of James Meredith (1st black @ Ole Miss).

20. Your correct
He was the IFC president -- almost the same thing at a school that is 70% greek.

He didn't support integration -- but he is credited with convincing the students (fraternity members) not to riot.

3. Are you suggesting blacks in MS should hate Lott because he's white?
Isn't that bigoted?

I oppose Lott on most issues but he has helped African Americans in Mississippi and the nation in spite of his tendency to put his foot in his mouth.

4. No, because he's a nutjob
The guy is affiliated with the Council of Conservative Citizens, which was previously known as the White Citizen's Council.

Being white has nothing to do with it.

6. I did not see your concern about CCC in the OP. They are on ADL's list
and we know the Anti-Defamation League is never wrong in targeting groups that it hates. :sarcasm:

That's my opinion and of course you and I probably disagree.

8. I get not trusting the ADL, but uh...
Just about everyone considers the CCC a hate group, and it's not a "PC" thing, they basically admit they're white separatist. They hate king, they oppose desegregation, etc...

Simply because the right-wing fanatics at the ADL list them as a hate group isn't a reason to claim they aren't.

Don't forget Lott was instrumental in getting the law passed declaring True Parents Day later changed to Parents Day honoring Syung Mung Moon and his wife. Bill Clinton signed the bill and we honor the True Parents, the Moons on National Parents Day, 27 July 2006.

Have a Happy Parents Day and send your gifts to Rev. Moon.

:hi:

P.S. The Moons were crowned in the Dirksen Senate Office Building on March 23, 2004.

9. Jobs, jobs, jobs and jobs
Trent brings JOBS to Mississippi. And those jobs aren't just "whitie" jobs--they're jobs for everyone. He brings home the bacon.

And he takes pains to ensure people KNOW about it, if it's Rolls Royce, Ratheon, Northrop Grumman, you name it (click on links to see photos if you so desire; there's tons at his Senate website):

NGSS Welder Willie Griffin with Sen. Lott & others
(l-r) Gen. Michael W. Hagee, Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, Mrs. Silke Boie Hagee, Ship’s Sponsor for MAKIN ISLAND (LHD 8), and U.S. Senator Trent Lott, of Mississippi, and (background) Phil Dur, president, Northrop Grumman Ship Systems take time to discuss the work of NGSS Welder Willie Griffin after he permanently welded the authenticators’ initials on the ship’s nameplate signifying that the keel was “truly and fairly laid.”

He also is out and about when it comes to scholarships and education:

Senator Lott visits students at Trent Lott Middle School
Senator Lott has made public education a legislative priority, and he actively seeks ways the federal government can better support Mississippi's public elementary, secondary and higher education system. Here he is pictured with Former Education Sectetary Rod Paige during the Secretary's visit to Mississippi last year.

13. Wait a minute, you're not saying he's a Big Government politician are you?
Edited on Wed May-31-06 11:03 PM by kenny blankenship
the kind that thinks the gov't has some sort of lookout for the wellbeing of ordinary folks-- a legitimate interest in how they fare--and a role in seeing to it that they have jobs to go to and gov't supported schools for their kids?

I'm pretty sure ol' Trent and all his gang have been badmouthing that kind of big gummint intervention in the private economy for a long time. I know his party does. Do they know about him?

17. Ahhh, but remember, he used to be LEADER Lott
Before his pork-barrelling ways, his bringing home the bacon, and insistence that the Senate serve as a CHECK against Presidential power, and a BALANCE to it, pissed off Rover, so the WH fanned the flames of that Strom business and shoved him aside in favor of the more compliant Frist.

But he's still got friends, and many of them are, believe it or not, Democrats. Who sent the very first planeload of relief supplies to him post-Katrina? Why, John Kerry and Theresa Heinz did!

Trent is a hardball politician, but he has a sense of fairness that many don't realize. He'll fight hard for his side, as well as his state, but he won't shit on people, and he doesn't take kindly to being crapped on by the Monkey and crew.

He's biding his time. And I believe he regards revenge as a dish best served cold. I think he wants that Leader job back. Here's hoping he gets it, and is the MINORITY LEADER. At least he knows how to do business in a halfway equitable fashion, compared to those thugs at the WH....

Lott is trying to regain his popularity in the senate, and because of it, we'll be seeing more of this type of polling from his state.

18. Probably ones who were working at Northrop, at Pascagoola, at
Raytheon, at Rolls Royce, or any number of the job-producing businesses that TRENT hauled down to his state. Decent jobs, decent wages, at companies that give you time off to vote.

Make no mistake, that guy is a bacon-bringer extraordinaire.

senators. I'll bet they'll come close to the same. Yeah, the numbers do surprise me a little, but they're not outrageous. Most blacks in Mississippi work too hard to have much time to ponder politics and most probably don't care enough to tell you what Trent represents...

I've voted against Trent in EVERY SINGLE ELECTION since 1972, but he's really not any eviler than some of the Republican freaks in Washington. I don't defend him, but I do defend the poor blacks who aren't overly outraged. They're too damned tired from working 12 hour shifts at the catfish processing plant ($5.35 still minimum wage?) to give a good goddamn who sits in the senate.
