3 Google Ads for Duke on the General Discussion page.
I had noticed the Duke Lacrosse thread. (I had turned the ads off). Logged out and there were 3 ads for Duke.

Interesting how that works.

They sure have plenty of money to counteract any news of misbehavior by some of their infamous students.

Too bad they don't put more money into educating them. (Like on reasonable (ie, not sexist, not racist, not criminal) behavior).

4. You must have only read the title of my post and you missed the point.
I did turn them off.

What I was commenting on is how the ads (which I noticed after I logged out) are tied into subjects (like the alleged rape/battery/assault by Duke Lacrosse players) allowing Duke to try to spread their propaganda and influence.

Of course - neither the DA, nor the victims have such leverage.

Google ads are set up to be triggered by key words. The ads work in two ways. One is fairly simple if you look for a word on google and the advertiser has selected that word as one of their keywords, the advertisers ad will appear(positon depends on how much they bid for their maximum cost per click).

The other method works on algorithms searching out key terms and relevant content.

Hence a thread dealing with Duke is more likely to have Duke related ads.

Do you know where the ads lead? I just typed Duke, Duke University, Duke Lacrosse among other search termss and didn't see an ad for the university itself.

9. It doesn't work that way at all.
Google ads appear according to keywords on the page. Duke doesn't get to decide where their ads appear, and they certainly WOULDN'T want their ads appearing in a thread like that. Contrary to what you suggest, it's not some kind of propaganda campaign. Tune down the paranoia.

11. The point that seems to be getting missed
on so many - is the effect of Duke's PR campaign. The fact that they have the money to run these ads that show up when people are discussing anything Duke related. The fact that they have the ability to hire high powered PR people - to counteract any negative publicity.

And there is also the fact that there are many people who are in denial that people with money, organizations with money fare better in the court system than those who don't ("due process" or not). It's a pretty basic concept. Nothing new. Nothing related to paranoia.

And why wouldn't they be happy to have a positive ad campaign show up when some people would be saying things that could reflect negatively on them? Seems like the perfect time.
