Gore to challenge Bush presidency

It sounds as if Al Gore is about to deliver what could be not just one of the more significant speeches of his political career but an essential challenge to the embattled presidency of George W. Bush.

In a major address slated for delivery Monday in Washington, the former Vice President is expected to argue that the Bush administration has created a "Constitutional crisis" by acting without the authorization of the Congress and the courts to spy on Americans and otherwise abuse basic liberties.

Aides who are familiar with the preparations for the address say that Gore will frame his remarks in Constitutional language. The Democrat who beat Bush by more than 500,000 votes in the 2000 presidential election has agreed to deliver his remarks in a symbolically powerful location: the historic Constitution Hall of the Daughters of the American Revolution. But this will not be the sort of cautious, bureacratic speech for which Gore was frequently criticized during his years in the Senate and the White House.

Indeed, his aides and allies are framing it as a "call to arms" in defense of the Bill of Rights and the rule of law in a time of executive excess.

The vice president will, according to the groups that have arranged for his appearance -- the bipartisan Liberty Coalition and the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy -- address "the threat posed by policies of the Bush Administration to the Constitution and the checks and balances it created. The speech will specifically point to domestic wiretapping and torture as examples of the administration's efforts to extend executive power beyond Congressional direction and judicial review."

cont'd...

My husband says he's a loser and we're having a big argument!

He doesn't think he can win.

He doesn't think he can get the nomination.

We've got a Democratic split right in this house!

I just yelled at him, "What happened to 'ANYBODY BUT BUSH'? Do you believe it anymore???"

I'm going out for a while to cool off!!!!!

4. Gore's standing taller these days than he ever did as a
Senator or Vice President.

The rightful winner of the 2000 election, Al Gore could carry the banner successfully for the Democratic Party, no doubt.

And it would likely blow the tires off Senator Clinton's campaign hopes, too.

25. Bob Barr (!) will introduce him !!
Former U.S. Representative Bob Barr, the Georgia Republican who served as one of the most conservative members of the House, plans to introduce Gore. Barr, an outspoken critic of the abuses of civil liberties contained in the USA Patriot Act critic who has devoted his post-Congressional years to defending the Bill of Rights, refers to the president's secret authorization of domestic wiretapping as "an egregious violation of the electronic surveillance laws."

27. I like your title. Gore to Challenge Bush Presidency.
I thought he already did that in Gore v Bush.

Seriously. We are out here waiting for someone to emerge who we can all rally behind. Perhaps a team of Gore/ Dean/ Clark/ Edwards/ Clinton/ Kerry/ Warner could all get the same talking points and lead us forward with a progressive, positive message.

Let's start with Edwards' "Two Americas," combine with Hillary's "Healthcare," Stir well. Then we have to come up with a plan on the immigration problem and Iraq and bake well. (We don't want any half baked plans, do we.)

I will rally around the party even if it has a part that I may not agree with. I will learn to love that part because anything a Dem comes up with is better than this culture of corruption that comes with Republicans running the show.

36. We are out here waiting for someone to emerge who we can all rally behind.
Couldn't agree more! At this very moment there's an issue every American could understand and get behind if someone would get up and start shouting about it: the Medicare drug plan. It highlights everything wrong in this administration - deception, industry writing legislation, the way crooked bills are brought to the floor and bullied through, etc.

As important as domestic spying is, I think the dems are making hay while the sun shines (don't hit me - read on!). Yes, it's wrong and yes it's worthy of great attention but just as with Katrina when the dems finally got one voice to speak against Brownie, they were left flat-footed when he got demoted because they'd latched onto a single issue. There's so much wrong that sometimes I think the other side plans it that way to keep our heads whirling but democrats have got to learn to address more than one thing at a time AND to stop waiting until they've carefully stuck their fingers in the wind to check the direction.

84. Thanks for the welcome! C-Span where I am is Channel 22, but I had to
program it manually because, as is often the case, what is listed for CSpan on my Tivo on-screen guide differs from what has actually been scheduled or is being shown (I guess this happens because CSpan switches their programming around a lot).

96. "Bad republican! No! Now got your ROOM."
I know Al Gore hasn't even given his speech yet and that, as of right now, no clear indication has been given that he has any plans what so ever to run for president in '08 (there's even evidence to the contrary, I know.) but I have to say that all of the sudden I have a huge RENEWED hard-on to VOTE for AL GORE. I mean it. I feel a NEED for him to be president. I get warm and fuzzy just imagining how things would be and when I think of the possibility that we may take back a house of congress or two by then my eyes roll back in my head and I begin to drool and moan like Homer Simpson eying a can of beer. (MMMMM.... Gore...)

I hope this address on Monday is FIERY. I'd love to see a naked, SPITTING rage from Mr. Gore. A righteous and TOWERING rage. I mean I want to hear "wrath of gOD", "terrible swift sword" kind of rhetoric directed at the Bush* admin. I want there to be alot of STOMPING as he speaks, maybe even some POUNDING.

I hope Limbaugh and co. will have moderate to severe STROKES and/ or aneurysms from all the exertion of shouting about "WILD EYED LIBERALS" they'll be doing next week.

I want a speech SO inspiring that an ARMY of proud "wild eyed" liberals march on the capitol with Howard Dean and Al Gore out in front grabbing every dirty, greedy republican out from under the piles of feces coated 100 dollar bills that they hide under to rub their petulant fat conservative faces in the HORRID MESS they've been making for the last five years. "Bad republican! No! Now got your ROOM."

Having said all this I will, however, sheepishly admit that I have been disappointed in the past.

100. Gore could take the presidency in a Diebold-proof landslide.
Edited on Sat Jan-14-06 07:39 PM by Dunvegan
He's a scandal-clean intellectual Southerner who is a man of integrity, has been a heart-beat from the Presidency for eight years, in a White House that left us with our first surplus in who-knows-how-long.

He's a statesman and a humanitarian.

And if he's now a firebrand, Gore is hands-down our candidate.

He's absolutely this Democrat's candidate in 2008.
