Anyone seen "An Inconvenient Truth?" |
|
It is rated PG, is it appropriate for kids who know about global warming? Is there any video of 9/11?

I want to go tomorrow afternoon and my kids will be very upset if they can't go. They are 6 and 9 but are very aware of this topic because I talk about it all of the time with them.

knowledge on to the next generation. Given the ages of your children I would say they are the generation after the next one, but it's never too early.
On a regular basis, I inform my grand-children on these issues, I KNOW they respect me because when they have questions that are out of the norm for budding youth, they do come to me. I may not be an expert, nor do I have all the answers, but I do give my opinion and direct them to places where I think they might be able to find what they are looking for. I also make them aware that in a Republic, our Constitution set forth certain guidelines that where desi gated to promote Democracy. Having said that, I have come to realize that WE as a Nation have fallen into a trap where "instant gratification" and a "feel good" society is normal. Keeping up with the Joneses is a way of life, and anything less makes one feel inferior. Group think prevails... and IMO will not only be the downfall of America, but in many ways be a silent predator of human existence. It doesn't really matter whether you believe that God created the Universe or not, it DOES matter what each of us is going to do to preserve its existence. Civil disobedience IS NOT a crime, it's a right that I have been taught was MY civic duty. But what I see these days is a society less informed and less likely to stand up for the definition of a Democracy that I grew up with.
We MUST understand that it is our responsibility to educate not only our children, but grand-children as well. One thing that has distressed me for a very long time is the absence of Civics as a "required" subject in school today. Regardless of how flawed the facts might be of past events, having SOME knowledge is better than having NO knowledge at all. We here in America have been riding on the premise that we HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS to World problems, and that leaders will do "the correct thing!" IMO That is LIE that has been perpetrated upon too many very hard working busy busy people! For those of us who are now into our late 50's or early sixties... it's is our DUTY to educate those who will follow us.
Standing up for what we believe is what I was taught would make America great. Now all we do is sit at our computers and make comments on events that happen within the past 12 to 24 hour time table. We do NOTHING but talk!

3. I would think it fine for kids. I'm an elementary teacher. |
|
The only thing that would have bothered me as a child is that they said polar bears are drowning since they can't find ice to rest on. As a kid, I would have picked up on that. You do not see a dead polar bear.
How old are the kids? Gore is so clear and direct, I bet kids will follow a large percentage of it. Maybe kids in 5th grade and up will get a basic grip of it. It really depends on the kid and their previous exposure to the subject matter.
No 9-11 footage (that I remember.)

7. I didn't think there would be |
|
but I was just being cautious. I thought there was an outside chance when they talked about our dependence on oil they might mention it. I really didn't think there would be but I didn't want them to see it if there was.

6. It would definately be OK for kids. However, someone set a fire in |
|
the theatre in Brookline MA where it was showing. No one was hurt, but the theatre had to be shut down for the night! http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=2319790&mesg_id=2319790

10. There was some discussion of this on a Daily Kos thread. I asked |
|
about my 8 year old daughter and they thought it would be appropriate for her. I haven't seen it yet but am going to take my 7 yo son and 8 yo daughter (when it shows up nearby - late June or July).
I have another daughter who will be 5 in a couple of weeks. I think she is probably too young to follow and be interested in it but I am just going on what I've seen other people write about it.

11. Saw it last night -- it is an amazing film. |
|
Edited on Fri Jun-02-06 09:11 PM by IdaBriggs
It contains some very disturbing footage of Hurricane Katrina victims, and I would be cautious about very young children seeing it, but it should be okay for the twelve and over crowd.
ON EDIT: Its very well presented, but it is an hour and a half long "lecture" and I wouldn't expect anyone under twelve to be able to sit through it myself, but obviously, each child is different....

13. I forgot about that! There is some footage of dead bodies floating. |
|
I apologize to the OP for this slip. I'm not sure how kids might take this. I think it really depends on the kids.
My mom use to lean over and tell me to cover my eyes. This worked for me when I was a kid (hell, I still do that!)

16. Just got back! My husband and I took my daughter (14) and her 14 year old |
|
friend. They loved it. It was very easy to comprehend and they feel very strongly about becoming part of the solution. I have never really had much of a conversation with my daughter about global warming. She mostly just hears general rants about all the crooks, liars and unbelievable evil that has taken over our country. After listening to me for 6 years, Al Gore seemed extremely calm and rational.
