Air America to go off air in Atlanta... |
|
Edited on Wed Jun-07-06 09:31 PM by wanpete
1690 has been bought and the new owner will re-program station to air music and only the Al Franken show from 12-3 each day. In a market that has SO MANY right wing talk shows, it was so refreshing to have AA to listen to. Truth is not an option. Ignorance is obviously bliss. I'm praying that AA will resurface on another station. It will be sad to think that a city with so many progressive thinkers will have no progressive radio programming. Article regarding this on AJC.com.

5. Here's the info regarding the new owner |
|
Joe Weber, who recently purchased WWAA-AM/1690, will be migrating his eclectic music format (everything from Pavoratti to Springsteen, Beethoven to Aretha) from 1160 starting Monday June 12. 1690 has run liberal talk show syndicate Air America the past couple of years. Weber is planning to keep only Al Franken from noon to 3 p.m. He says his focus is on mornings and drivetime and by keeping Franken, he hopes to grab a few of those Air America fans. This does mean no more access to Rachel Maddow, Janeane Garafalo, Jerry Springer and Randi Rhodes unless you have XM Satellite radio or you can listen online. 1160, which Weber also owns, will simulcast until he creates a new format there. He wouldn’t say what he’s going to put there.

2. I really hope AM 1160 picks up the AAR programming. |
|
As much as I love Al, I would terribly miss not hearing Rachel, Randi, Sam, and Janean on a daily basis. Having AAR on in my car is the only thing that makes this Atlanta traffic bearable! I will seriously invest in XM or Sirius if AAR doesn't find a new home. I refuse to listen to these horrible Atlanta FM radio personalities... :puke:

NOTHING can make Atlanta traffic bearable, NOTHING!
A few years ago, I had to go to Atlanta on a business trip. I finished up and headed west. I was breezing along the interstate, listening to the music when I casually glanced in my rear view mirror. About 200 feet behind me was a solid wall of cars and trucks. I mean that literally. It was quitting time.
They were gaining on me, and frankly, I didn't want to be run over. I hit 80 and kept it there. That was the worst traffic I ever saw, even the downtown driving that I'd had to do earlier in the day. The only worse place, traffic-wise that I have personally been is Houston, TX.
Still, if you're caught in traffic, it's better if you've got something to listen to that you want to hear.

16. You got that right about Atlanta traffic . . . |
|
Every time I had to go through that city -- and it was always a weekend -- the traffic was horrible.
This time I took a back road -- it took longer -- but no damned Atlanta traffic.
I HATE TRAFFIC.

4. I actually thought it was already gone in ATL |
|
It came back in Phoenix after going off. There are people in powerful places working to undermine AA, yet it survives.

in Phoenix. This really rots, they took off Mike Malloy in New York WLIB, something weird is going on.

9. There's nothing weird about WLIB taking off Malloy at that time slot — |
|
they were simply able to make much more money by running Satellite Sisters (even with Malloy's ad dollars).

11. But that's not the point. WLIB needs money and that was a way to make it. |
|
"American Idol" is not as good as "Frontline" either, but a hell of a lot more people watch it.

which is one way of making (potentially more) money. Or maybe it's just a coincidence. With the WLIB lease running out in March, it would have been a way for AAR to buy some time to find a new flagship. Plus there seems to have been an effort to get Mike cleared in more markets recently (perhaps in lieu of the hoped for NYC outlet). (shrug) Just a guess.
