I don't think the breifing would have been canceled over this - quite the contrary - the bushies would want this shouted from the rooftops.

if there were any doubts over the validity of the report - they could just issue a no comment pending validation of the report - if the subject came up

20. Developing Story: Terror leader al-Zarqawi dead, Iraqi officials say (CNN)
From Debra Krajnak
CNN

Thursday, June 8, 2006; Posted: 3:34 a.m. EDT (07:34 GMT)

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the most wanted insurgent in Iraq, is dead, according to an aide to Iraq's prime minister.

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki was expected to make a public announcement of the death, the details of which are unclear.

Two Pentagon officials told CNN that the government is awaiting al-Maliki's announcement in Baghdad before commenting on the report officially.

One official says the Pentagon is not sure of how the death was confirmed and that there might need to be "additional forensics" done before they can be fully confident the terrorist leader is dead.

Officials could provide no further details at this time.

the world is populated by fools. Not to mention that top military personal have stated that they believe is a myth. This Jordanian, easily distinguished in Iraq from the population there (no, they don't all look alike) has never been seen as far as we know.

Did this Zarqawi have one or two legs? They really are worried about SOMETHING if they finally decided to kill of the myth they created. I wonder what it is, aside from all that we already know!

Maybe Specter was serious today, and Dick was about to get a subpoena? I heard on the news that he 'didn't have time' to read the letter!

What a bunch of liars.

28. The guy Bush could have taken out before the Iraq invasion but refused to
do so because it might undermine his justification for war? Military drew up attack plans and Bush Administration repeatedly said no. (At least that's what NBC previously reported.)

Let's see. The guy has been alive, dead, two-legged and one-legged for years now according to various reports. I guess he's outlived his usefulness as a boogeyman for the Administration and now has more value as an illustration of the "progress" of the war in Iraq.

Now that they say he's gone, I guess peace will reign in Iraq and the troops will be brought back asap? Yeah, right. Unfortunately, I don't think that will happen.

32. More importantly, Carlos Purnell died
Yes, he was just another American soldier but his death is more important than Zarqawi's death. The War will go on whether Zarqawi is dead or alive - added to the other deaths of American servicemen, Carlos' death may just stop this War.

Purnell's family is angry as they mourn, questioning why their son - a carpenter by trade - must die overseas. His family called him C-low and they say Carlos always had an attitude and deep down he always just wanted to help.

What was the source of any of the photos allegedly of him? How easy and simple and logical it would be to disinform by circulating one or more fake photos. One article referred to id'ing him by fingerprints. Where the hell did they get fingerprints to have on file?

34. Waiting for Al Qaeda...
Islamist expert Yasser al-Sirry

"Zarqawi's death, if confirmed, will have little effect on the jihad in Iraq."

"He made clear several times that he is the leader of one faction that is fighting under the Mujahideen Council umbrella. I expect no let up in the jihad, maybe even an escalation as his followers wage retribution killings."

Sirry said he would only be sure of Zarqawi's death when Al Qaeda announced it: "They will not shy from announcing it, after all, he is a martyr."

Al-Qaida in Iraq confirmed al-Zarqawi's death and vowed to continue its "holy war," according to a statement posted on a Web site.

"We want to give you the joyous news of the martyrdom of the mujahed sheik Abu Musab al-Zarqawi," said the statement, signed by "Abu Abdel-Rahman al-Iraqi," identified as the deputy "emir" or leader of al-Qaida in Iraq.

"The death of our leaders is life for us. It will only increase our persistence in continuing holy war so that the word of God will be supreme."

62. Odd little detail
I first saw this story on the Boston Globe online:

http://www.boston.com/news/world/middleeast/articles/2006/06/08/zarqawi_killed_in_attack/

And I noticed this little detail:
"US helicopters fired rockets into a house occupied by Zarqawi and a band of men, according to US and Iraqi officials. Iraq troops on the ground removed Zarqawi from the house, and he died as their prisoner, they said."

In subsequent reports I've read and heard that the Iraqi police were the first on scene on the ground and yet all other reports either explicitly or leave it as an inference that Al-Zarqawi was killed by the bombs/missile attack with no mention of him ever being a 'prisoner' and dieing while he was held.

Interesting...
