Bald Eagle Amendment
Congress will be taking up a flag burning amendment. Yup - another wedgie to pander to their extreme base.

I suggest we introduce an amendment to protect the Bald Eagle. The Bald Eagle is just as much of a national symbol as is the flag.

The amendment would protect the Bald Eagle from ALL harm - which would include damage/encroachment/development to it's natural habitat. After all if you destroy or damage it's habitat there will be devestating effects on this our national symbol.

It will drive the GOPer's owners crazy (i.e. logging/mining/oil drillers etc.)

3. I love the idea!
I sure wish the environment could be among the top five or ten issues this coming election season, but I'm not holding my breath. Even when self proclaimed liberals talk of seeing "an inconvenient truth" they speak primarily about whether or not Gore will run in 2008-NOT whether protecting the environment should be among our top priorities.

If we made environmental protection (including species protection) a top issue and Gore DID choose to run, he would likely win by a landslide. Repugs view nature as either a profitable resource, an obstacle, or something darkly associated with sex, liberalism, and paganism. It's time to make the people understand that without biodiversity and a healthy planet we as a species will suffer terribly, and soon face extinction ourselves.

4. Amendment to the amendment...
Change it from protecting Bald Eagle to also include protecting our national Flower....

National Flower: http://www.santacruzpl.org/readyref/files/q-s/rose.shtml
September 23, 1986, the House of Representatives passed a joint resolution naming the rose as the "national floral emblem" of the United States. The Senate had passed the resolution in 1985.

The measure then went to President Ronald Reagan. He signed the resolution into law on October 7, 1986 in a ceremony in the White House Rose Garden.

On November 20, 1986, President Reagan signed Proclamation 5574: The National Floral Emblem of the United States of America: The Rose.

6. I think you misunderstood
in addition to the Bald Eagle we include the Rose in a National Symbol Protection Amendment.

This would further expand habitat/environmental protection areas.

8. I follow your reasoning
and that of other posters...but can't help feeling that adding a flower works. If it's just the eagle we can use the "You hate eagles....blah,blah..." argument.

Just my $.02

9. the eagle would be the main focus
Edited on Thu Jun-08-06 04:16 AM by radfringe
we recently went through a big broohaha over the national anthem being sung in Spanish -- congress got all bent out of shape and it morphed into a national language bill

the eagle, the rose, oak tree etc. are just a natural extension of preserving our "american" identity

instead of picking at this piecemeal with individual legislation - we should make it all inclusive

With the Eagle as the 'centerpiece' those opposing it could still be accused of "you hates our eagles"

7. And The Oak, our National Tree
There are 60 species, an oak species grows in every state.

"The oak tree will now be as much a symbol of America as Thanksgiving Day, Old Glory, the Star Spangled Banner, and the bald eagle," Senator Nelson said.

That's Ben Nelson of Nebraska. Maybe we can make him put his money where his mouth is and actually offer some protection for the tree, otherwise what's the point of having a national tree at all.

13. by all means
we'll even throw in George Washington's kitchen sink :)

had another idea too - regarding the MEXICAN WALL and how to fund it without spending taxpayers money - we get corporate sponsors and sell advertising space.

the side that faces US territory is in English only, the side that face Mexico is spanish only...

17. Not a bad idea
The amendment would have to include not only habitat, but emphasis the resources required to support healthy populations of Bald Eagles across their historic range. That way, the eagle as a top-rung predator serves as an umbrella protecting all the species in the food chain underneath it.
