11:00 am, and NO OTHER NEWS in the world
No Haditha.

No poll numbers.

No roadside bombs.

No embarrassing gays.

No Estate Tax.

Mission Accomplished!

Five solid hours of this al-Zarqawi shit so far. You'd think they just found UBL or something! Oops...that's for October.

2. We're hearing it here in Canada too
And it's infuriating me. I feel like writing a letter to the CBC, patiently explaining that this is not the triumph they think it is.

8. Why is there so much seething resentment on DU...
..about this?

I don't get it.

Zarqawi was a bad guy. It is good news he is dead whether you support or oppose the war. It is also the biggest news story of the moment - ofcourse the media are focusing on it.

Why do so many people on DU whine, cry, toss out a bunch of dopey conspiracy theories, and appear otherwise dejected over things the vast majority of the American people would welcome?

I do NOT support America's "Islamic democracy" mission in Iraq. I think it is misguided and doomed to failure.

But I hope my view of this is wrong. I hope, since we are now in Iraq anyway, that somehow this project succeeds and Iraq does become democratic and more peaceful. I don't want to see the lives of all those US soldiers and innocent civilians to have been lost in vain. I hope decades from now the Iraqi people will be thankful in the same way many Europeans are still thankful for the sacrifice of American forces.

I swear, sometimes I almost get the sense that some people here are gleeful when the "insurgents/terrorists" in Iraq kill innocent civilians or US soldiers. It is as if some folks want to see things go as badly as possible - and are actually happy when it does. Opposing the war is patriotic - but actually pulling for Zarqawi and his lot is something else entirely.

I just don't understand all the gloom and doom over this. This isn't going to help Bush beyond perhaps a few point bounce in the polls that won't last. This doesn't hurt Democrats or progressives. So why the moaning and complaining? I consider this great news. I'm glad Zarqawi is dead.

9. News?
Most news we get is from foreign sources. They are up to something, or else they figure they have played this latest card to their advantage and Bush can return to his ranch to cut more shrub...work off that hangover is more like it.

10. Who is "they"..
Zarqawi is dead. He was killed by a US airstrike. It is a big story. The guy was a nasty guy and it is a good thing he is gone.

"They are up to something", "They figure they have played this latest card" - who the hell is this "they"?

I hope your not talking about the Bush administration. This administration is basically incompetent. The world is not a giant conspiracy. And if it was, there is one thing I am sure of - the Bush administration wouldn't be able to pull it all off. So, who is this "they" that you seem to think is behind everything?

12. your characterizations are false hyperbole, and speak more of your own
perceptions than what is actually being posted.

11. al-Zarqawi was in iraq because U.S. actions drew him there. 'bout time we
took care of a problem of our own creation.
