I was thinking of this after Will's explanation for the Truthout affair. He mentioned that in the wake of the 9/11 attacks he had posted a thread saying we needed to support Bush. I actually remember that thread as I had just found DU in the wake of those attacks. I agreed with him then. It never occured to me that Bush would do what he did. It never occured to me that instead of using 9/11 to unite the country and actually fight a sensible war against Bin Laden and ask the American people as a whole to sacrifice to make us less dependent on oil. Instead he not only decided to use 9/11 for a divisive domestic agenda he used it to justify a foreign policy that lost us any sympathy that 9/11 may have engendered.
The true cost here was of opportunity. We could have had a unified country that was truely safe, instead we have a divided country, a degraded military, and a hostile world to contend with. This is Bush's worst crime.

at the library. I walked out and there was a car parked next to me that had one of those "United We Stand" stickers on it. Wondered what universe those people lived in. Just thought that THIS is Bush's worst crime -- using a horrific event to further divide us.
