Mary Cheney's book sells fewer than 6,000 copies since release

The Advocate

Despite saturation media coverage when it was published a month ago, Mary Cheney's book Now It's My Turn has tanked at bookstores. Published by a conservative imprint of Simon & Schuster, the memoir has sold fewer than 6,000 copies to date, according to Nielsen Bookscan.

The book's sales have declined in each of the four weeks since its release, to only 574 copies sold for the week ending June 3. That's 77% fewer than its first-week sales of 2,445.

At this rate, it will be virtually impossible for Simon & Schuster to recoup the reported $1 million advance it paid Cheney for the book, which describes her life as the gay daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney.

4. Bless the Advocate for this info - they hide their flops well usually
Looks like the all media blow out didn't help. So daddy rousted out 6000 serfs to buy it? Were they Halliburton employees? Will they use the opus as doorstop or mulch for the compost?

29. I watched on The NewsHour the other night where
mulched up stuff like this should be added to coal for binding with carbon atoms when it is burned to hopefully decreased greenhouse gas effect. Seems like the highest and best use. Or as a door prop.

5. Wow. 6,000 copies sold after a $1 million advance?
How utterly pathetic. That's the end of her "literary" career.

I agree...
There are many first time authors who do so much better in terms of sales and they only get a $100,000.00 advance.

20. The average advance for a first-time author in lit/fic is much less
than $100k; more like $15-$50k. Memoir is still considered a "hot" genre, so they tend to go for a bit more, assuming they're "sexy" enough. I guess Mary Cheney had some celebrity appeal, though she's always come across as brittle and unhappy IMO. Selling a memoir to the public is all about selling the author--and Mary Cheney isn't a particularly compelling figure, I don't think. This deal will also damage or sink her editor's career--eds totally put their credibility on the line when they pitch a book like this to the folks upstairs.

11. The $1m wasn't an investment in her sales. It was bribe to her dad.
I think they'll still get their million dollars' worth. What they bought was Dick Cheney's gratitude. Gee, I hope no one thinks I'm implying it was a bribe.

Those who make enough money to buy hard cover books. It's hard to buy hardcover when you can't even afford to move out of mom's basement.

23. What hint? She got a million bucks! Dad's happy. She's set. What downside?
It's a legalized 'thank you' to her dad. I really don't think anyone saw actual sales of her book as anything but possible icing on a very very rich cake.

Who the hell is BUYING the dreadful thing at all?? I guess the sales figures are the world's way of telling Dear Mary that Now It's HER Turn...to shut up!

You've got to wonder what IDIOTS made that deal to begin with--the woman is a well-known sellout, and she is JUST NOT THAT INTERESTING, except as a figure who inspires a bit of disgust.

The sort of people who would normally be in the market for that type of book are the same sort who hate gays and would never want to read a book by one.
