Math formula needed--math wizards out there? |
|
Please excuse the interruption:
I have a number which represents a 3% increase over the original number. What is the formula to find the original number?
*now back to your regularly scheduled programs...

1. Divide the number by 1.03 to get the original number. |

As proof, given that a 3% increase over 100 is 103, divide 103 by 1.03

I have a number which represents a 3% increase over the original number.
Translation: "i have a number" = Y "which represents" = equals "3% increase over original" = 1.03 times X.
Y = 1.03 * X.
So, X = Y / 1.03

5. Exactly, and to prove it to yourself. |
|
take your result, and multiply it by 0.03, add that to the result, and you should get the number you started with in your OP.

x = 1.03y x/1.03 = 1.03y/1.03 x/1.03 = y
where x = "a number" (that you mention first) and y = the original number
