10. ...on second thought, why be glad of that?
Edited on Sun Jun-11-06 11:05 AM by Jackpine Radical
Naming a hurricane for Al Gore would drive home the global warming connection and remind people of a lotta things they need to be reminded of.

17. Was thinking more in terms of they'd want to associate something
bad with a democrat. Like what if Hurrican Katrina had been Hurricane Kerry? But I see your point. Living in NC, I'm really dreading this shit this year. I don't start getting really twitchy until they hit F's, Fran and Floyd really left their mark here.

My brother and my sister are BOTH hurricanes this year--Chris and Debby (and yes, that's how she spells it) and my dad, William is on there, too. Thank goodness I'm not on the list, but how long ago did we have a hurricane named Mary?

And, if Alberto get's mean, they can shoot off their guns at it. Or, if it really gets out of hand get Pat Robertson to throw a few prayers at, and pass the basket.

27. The World Meteorological Organization names hurricanes.
Every year between June 1 and November 30 (commonly called hurricane season),
hurricanes threaten the eastern and gulf coasts of the United States,
Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

http://science.howstuffworks.com/hurricane.htm

The names are chosen by the World Meteorological Organization.
According to the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA):

"For several hundred years, hurricanes in the West Indies were often named
after the particular saint’s day on which the hurricane occurred.
For example, 'Hurricane San Felipe' struck Puerto Rico on September 13, 1876.
Another storm struck Puerto Rico on the same day in 1928,
and this storm was named 'Hurricane San Felipe the Second.'"

Until World War II, hurricanes were given only masculine names.
In the early 1950s, weather services began naming storms alphabetically and with only feminine names.
By the late 1970s, this practice was replaced with alternating masculine and feminine names.
The first hurricane of the season is given a name starting with the letter A,
the second with the letter B and so on.

According to NOAA, "the name lists... have an international flavor because hurricanes
affect other nations and are tracked by the public and weather services of many countries."

Hurricanes in the Pacific Ocean are assigned a different set of names than Atlantic storms.
For example, the first hurricane of the 2001 hurricane season was a Pacific Ocean storm
near Acapulco, Mexico, named Adolf.
The first Atlantic storm of the 2001 season would be named Allison.
A list of names through 2006 is available from the National Hurricane Center.

According to the NOAA:

"Whenever a hurricane has had a major impact, any country affected by the storm can request
that the name of the hurricane be “retired” by agreement of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
Retiring a name actually means that it cannot be reused for at least 10 years,
to facilitate historic references, legal actions, insurance claim activities, etc.
and avoid public confusion with another storm of the same name."

For a list of hurricane names that have been retired, check out this site.

33. The Weather Channel is a RIGHT WING organization!!
You can see the bias -- they show the weather on a map of the United States, which just shows how incredibly xenophobic they are!!!

And do they care about the long journey the hurricane made from the African coast? Noooooooo. They only care about what's going to happen to America and Americans when the hurricane crosses our borders. "Oh dear, whatever's going to happen to the spoiled Americans? Whine whine whine." The Weather Channel is blatantly nationalistic.

They drone on and on about barometric pressure and wind speeds, but that's just RW code talk for their HATE of the hurricanes.

And I have it on good authority that rush limbaugh's cousin's best-friend's wife's ex-boyfriend's son used to work at The Weather Channel. So if you're getting your info from the Weather Channel, you're practically a nazi.
