Did Bin Laden drop the dime on Zarqawi? |
|
It has been reported that Allied intelligence penetrated Zarqawi's group and the tip on his whereabouts came from an agent inside his group.
No-one seems to have reflected that this agent may well have been directed by bin Laden or his organization. Double agents, after all, are quite possible in a situation like this.
Osama had plenty of motive. Zarqawi did not bring his group "into" al Qaeda until after 9-11. He had been a rival of Osama's, but after 9-11 the franchise position must have seemed more profitable to Zarqawi. But Zarqawi remained a threat to Osama's primacy among the terror organizations, and his policy of creating a sectarian war against Shiites was contrary to al Qaeda's longstanding position. The al Qaeda leadership directed Zarqawi to cease from this, but Zarqawi didn't obey orders. By continuing, he was appealing to the anti-Shiite sentiments of Osama's Salafi and Wahhabi followers, endangering the unity of Osama's support if not Osama's primacy. By dropping the dime, Osama would have rid himself of a rival, without blame for it, eliminated or reduced the threat of Salafi unrest in his own support base, perhaps established, quietly within his inner circle, that it is better to follow his drections than to defy them.
He had the motive, and if the agent in Zarqawi's group was a double-agent of his, he had the means and the opportunity. Smoking gun, anyone?

1. I've been wondering about that possibility as well, I also............ |
|
....think there is a good possibility Bin Laden still has some inside contacts. Those contacts could be keeping him hind end safe. There's got to be a reason why we can't seem to find the boy when we've got GPS and everything else at our disposal.

2. That crossed my mind, too... |
|
wouldn't that be something if they collected the $25M bounty? Knowing this group, I can see it happening. Finance BL's next round, so to speak.

5. I wonder who gets the $25 million reward? |
|
Binny might have been low on cash, and needed an advance from Bush.
It wouldn't be the first time Bush's actions were just what Bin Laden wanted.

My gut tells me that Al Queda believed that Zarqawi was hurting the cause with his slaughtering muslim civilians not to mention that little video he had produced which plastered his mug over every TV set in the world. The guy was turning into a rock star and you get the feeling that Bin Laden was none too thrilled by this and decided that it was time for Zarqawi to lay down his life for Jihad--whether he wanted too or not.
Alive he was becoming a liability--dead he became a martyr. Of course I have absolutely no proof so this will have to remain a theory.
