7. She sure is a lame ass -- Had no alternative to Darwin
When the host asked her criticisioms of Darwinism and if she had any alternatives to Darwin, she couldn't come up with any.

That sums up what she's about. Pure negatyivity, with nothing positive to contribute.

Not only can she not point to an alternative to Darwinism, even though she 'knows' Darwinism is wrong, she also has a truly unique view of time.

When talking about schoolkids, she said "they're baptized in liberalism six hours a day, 12 days a week." Cosmologists should be made aware of Coulter's Law of Temporality. I'm sure it would solve some knotty problems in string theory.

21. Jeremy Paxman would eat Hannity for breakfast
and not even break a sweat doing it (the term "battle of wits with an unarmed man" comes to mind). That's why those guys don't come to the UK; their ugliness wouldn't find enough of a sympathetic audience to make it worthwhile to them. Even the conservatives in Britain are more liberal than most Americans, and the likes of Hannity and O'Reilly would be objects of derision.

She is entirely a creation of moneyed people on the right. You know, there was just an ad at the top of the page advertising her book for twenty cents. Really! Which means that great numbers of her book were bought by people for the sheer purpose of reselling them -- at a loss. Now... why would anyone do that??

20. I always knew that if Coulter ever agreed
to be interviewed for British TV, particularly by Jeremy Paxman, she'd be verbally eviscerated, and so she was. Paxman's like a bulldog when he interviews - if his interviewee won't answer a question, he'll continue asking it over and over until he gets an answer, and in this instance Coulter looked like the ill-informed fool that she is. My impression was that she was surprised that Paxman continued asking her about Darwinism instead of glossing over it and moving on to a fawning softball question the way an American interviewer would have done. She didn't get an easy ride and I'm amazed that she agreed to do the interview in the first place.

I love me some Jeremy Paxman on television, although I'm not sure I'd like him in person. We used to live in the same small town and I was behind him at the supermarket one day. He reduced the young checkout girl to tears because she wasn't ringing up his grocery purchases quickly enough for him.

But, boy, did he give Ann Coulter a smackdown!

24. I doubt her book will ever be on wide release here.
There's just no market for the kind of poison she spews. It might go over with the British National Party because of the hatefulness of it, but then again the BNP's focus is minorities. They don't care about liberals.

Coulter's entire premise is simply so ridiculous that I can't imagine anyone on this side of the pond being interested in it. Maybe a few anti-Americans will hold Coulter up as a prime example of what they think Americans are like - people like that might buy it.

I haven't seen a copy of any of her books in the UK at all, ever, and no one here knows who Ann Coulter is anyway, or cares.

28. Strangely enough, the BNP is a strong advocate for evolution
They flirted with some far right Christians earlier this year, but the BNP leadership is a great believer in all the 'Bell Curve' stuff about supposed IQ differences - they claim 'whites' have evolved differently, and so are the people who 'belong' in Britain. So when "Christian Voice" (the people behind the protest outside BBC executives' homes about "Jerry Springer the Opera", and hold political views such as regarding the EU as the tool of the anti-Christ) found this out, they had a big bust up:

14/03/06 - The BNP website reports that its supporters have "joined up with the Christian Council of Britain" to stand along side a Christian Voice and protest over ‘Jerry Springer: The Opera’ being played at De Montfort Hall in Leicester.

http://www.ekklesia.co.uk/content/news_syndication/article_060314bnp.shtml

and Christian Voice's version of the bust-up:

An intemperate email sent on 'Wednesday 5th April 2006 by one Dr Phil Edwards, Press Officer of the BNP, accused Christian Voice of ‘un Christian (sic) hatred’ and ‘supreme ignorance’ of both ‘BNP policy’ and ‘science based genetic evolutionary theory’.

When challenged on the latter point, Dr Edwards responded yesterday that the BNP’s position ‘that white people are more highly evolved than blacks’ is ‘a conclusion derived over 100 years of medical and scientific research.’ He asked for evidence that black people ‘are as evolved as us’.

Nailing the BNP’s colours even firmer to the secularist mast, Dr Edwards (whose real name according to a number of websites is Stuart Russell) told Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice: ‘If you don't believe in Darwinian evolution then you are even dafter than you appear.’

Stephen Green said today: ‘Now we know for certain both that the BNP is inherently racist and that its racism is based firmly on anti-Christian Darwinian evolutionary theory. The Bible is intellectually coherent throughout in saying firstly that we are all descended from common ancestors – Adam and Eve – (Gen 1:27-28) and then that the human race is “of one blood” (Acts 17:26) and one “whole family” (Eph 3:15). It is that understanding which drove the evangelical Christian, William Wilberforce, to campaign unceasingly for the abolition of slavery. We are due to celebrate the bi-centenary of his triumph, the abolition of the slave trade, on 25th March next year.

http://www.christianvoice.org.uk/Alerts/alert004.html

It's funny to watch 2 far right groups take lumps out of each other; I'm not sure what the BNP would do with Coulter, because by all accounts she's really pushed her apparent Creationist beliefs in the book. But the BNP do hate liberals too - I post on a UK politics forum, and the BNP supporters (it has an "anyone allowed, as long as they don't use personal insults or explicit racism" policy (and some BNPers manage to hold back the insults)) are always moaning about "bleeding heart liberals" and "political correctness". In fact, just yesterday, one put up a quote from Cicero about 'traitors', with no comment, and another immediately said it was about the left.

34. Yes, I think that would be the only reason the BNP
Edited on Wed Jun-21-06 07:51 AM by tenshi816
would ever embrace Coulter: she hates liberals, so she could be of interest to them.

I'm glad you've posted in this thread - I've never seen any of Ann Coulter's books on sale in the UK and wanted to ask if you have. Also, had you ever heard of her before you began posting on DU? I was surprised to see Coulter interviewed by Paxman because I just assumed she would never get out of her comfort zone where she might be asked hard questions.

I really can't imagine who would buy her books in the UK. Even the most conservative British people I know are still far to the left of Ann Coulter, plus "liberal" is not a dirty word to the British. Maybe, as I said in my other post, it might appeal to people who hate Americans anyway, so that they could say "see how crazy those people are".

What's your take on it? Has Coulter ever been mentioned in any other forums you post in? No one I know in the UK has ever heard of her.

Edited to add that I don't for one second think Ann Coulter really believes in creationism. She's pandering to her audience. Like so many of her ilk, she'll embrace whatever the right-wing fringe holds dear in order to continue raking in the $$$.

35. I don't think I have seen a Coulter book in the UK
but I don't exactly search for them :D. I think I may have briefly heard of her from another international (mainly US) forum before DU. I've also heard it claimed that the long blond-haired Republican lawyer who was in the West Wing for a series or 2 was meant to be inspired by her - but that character was a normal person who just put forward the respectable Republican views (the few there are), not hate, so I'm not convinced.

About her comfort zone - the replies in this thread seem to mean people in the US can now download the Newsnight clip OK, but during the live broadcast, it was blocked 'for copyright reasons' (though the rest of the broadcast was available) - see this thread. Possibly she didn't want it broadcast in case she really got monstered.

No, I can't see a market for her rants in Britain - the BNP true believers might buy into the hate, but they're not really the book-buying types, are they? They might pay for speeches, though. And while I might pick up a book like that in a shop just to see how awful it was (like browsing Free Republic), I'd think few people would part with cash.

I agree her creationist views are almost certainly pandering - I hadn't heard her put forward much religious stuff before this, and I can't see her as a sudden convert. I have wondered if the hate is a show too, but I'm coming more to the view that that is genuine. I can see someone keeping up faked disdain over the years for the sake of making a buck, but she now seems so angry that I think it's probably real (even if it wasn't at first - talk of hate can dehumanise you).

36. I've seen Ann Coulter books for sale...
...at the Chelmsford branch of Ottokars. Can't remember which one of hers it was but it had a big picture of her looking concerned on the front.

And before you all start calling for Ottokars to be boycotted I must also warn you that this branch is also the only place where I have seen WilliamPitt's book on sale as well!

As to the likelihood of her latest screed selling, I'm not sure that there will be the audience for it in the UK, not even with right wing tories. However, I would not be surprised if Melanie Phillips book sells very well, and she's not all that much better IMHO.

I've seen a lot of other Paxman interviews where he's pressed a lot harder for answers. He let her do a lot of talking, far more than he would have probably allowed a British interviewee in the same situation. I suspect that had he known about the specific stories she was bullshitting about he'd have humiliated her.

32. I liked the way he put her on the defensive
immediately (asking about her book "does it get any better?") and kept her that way throughout. I thought Coulter appeared both ill-informed and ill-prepared, unaccustomed as she is to an interviewer not giving her an easy ride.

Definitely agree with your last sentence. I wish Paxman had challenged Coulter on that bullshit story she told about the little girl being chastised by her politically correct liberal teacher for bringing plastic-wrapped sandwiches to school instead of having them in Tupperware. That nonsense smacks of an urban myth of right-wing origin. Paxman should have asked where she got that story, and whether it was verified or not.

I think Paxman may have pulled his punches a little bit to allow Coulter to make herself look foolish without any help from him. She looked completely flummoxed and, as I said, defensive.

I doubt Ann Coulter will be doing any book tours in the UK any time soon.

For one that story about the valedictorian was mischaracterised. The person in question was prosyletizing about how you can only be saved through J.C., far different than invoking God in a generic sense.

I think that story about the Kindergartener is complete bullshit too.

64. Unlikely
For one, I doubt that Coulter would risk going back on Newsnight again any time soon since the researchers would take her arguments from last night, find out the real story and let Paxman tear her to shreds.

I remember the story about the graduation ceremony, though she didn't mention any specific ceremony so she could, in theory, worm her way out of that one.

She really does fit the right-wing mind set - when cornered and unable to argue further, lie

26. Poor Anne, she's passed on
I predict that within two years she'll be found one morning naked in Central Park clad only in expensive boots, with twigs, grass and dirt matting her hair, masturbating furiously while holding a large picture of John Kerry and screeching "you bastard" alternating with mumbled recitations of the capabilities of America's missile defence system. She seems well on the way.

Waste really, but she seems to have started believing her own propaganda, it's not just a moneymaking vehicle, it's become an adventure. She's starting to look like one of those stereotypical beautiful but mentally ill Irish daughters whose saintly father needs to show up to take the poor thing in.

I especially love the part where he asked her how she figures there's a liberal bias in the media when she's being allowed on every network to promote her book.

44. How would the English put it?
Little Arfin' Annie appeared a bit out of her depth in that interview. She kept looking off to her right, but I'm not sure why. Maybe one of the studio assistants was holding up a bottle of vodka to remind her why she was submitting to this.

63. Thankyou, that's all that worked, and
The Freepers sure know how to drag out a question to keep from being asked too many more.

48. I wouldn't say pummel
I think he hits her early on Darwin and well then just lets her ramble. The best she can come up with is a few antidotal stories that she rambles through. Really she hurts herself because it turns out she really doesn't have anything interesting to say.

56. Compared to the TOUGHEST U.S. interview she's done,
he did pummel her. But compared to the journalistic standards you and I both would consider appropriate, Paxman probably did go easy on her. I've seen him do other interviews that were much more aggressive.
